It seems that you do not have the network set up.

I am using an old 486 as a firewall and I really don't login on it very
often and now the monitor has broken. I don't want to get another one but
instead use an old VT100 serial terminal.
Can I set up Linux to use the terminal instead of the non existing monitor?
Thank's for any help!

I know, I was just pointing in some direction. I still have the NIC and

If you are up to it, try tracing the program and see what it looks for and
where. This can by done by invoking the program with strace, like "strace -o
/tmp/trace.out -s 1024 -f qpopper".

If qpopper is invoked by xinetd, you'll have to insert a line "server =
/usr/bin/strace" and a line "server_args = -o /tmp/trace.out -s 1024 -f
qpopper" in the appropriate file in "/etc/xinetd.d".

By going through "/tmp/trace.out" you'll probably find out where things go
wrong.

Good luck.

a specific version of ppp is required by the 2.4.x kernel series. Of
course you would have known it had you read the docs.

Don't use two fdisks on one table, not ever.
(And more specific, don't ever use DOS FDISK if you also have the linux
version)
I can't tell what went wrong, I would have to see the partitiontable for
that.
Unfortunately, I think you're out of luck now.
Adding that windows partition probably overwrote part of the linux
partition,
and may well have messed up that table entirely.

> Warning: unable to open an initial console
> Kernel panic: No init found. try passing init= option to kernel

that's why I'm so worried.
init is on your root fs, if you got that corrupted....
(You can try init=/bin/bash, but even when that works, nothing is saved)

Your best bet is to use a boot/root floppy combination,
(a rescue system) to check the root FS.

> Could you please tell me how I can go about recovering my linux and
> windows partitions.

You should not have been playing around with that FDISK.EXE program.
I'd say, reinstall everything is your best bet. (the important data was
backed-up anyway, right)

if norton is the problem, then why can i compile certain projects in
msvc++6.0 and not others? and why is it that when i called ms tech support
on this problem, the technician even admitted it was an ms bug, not an
anti-virus one?

check the Terminal-HOWTO to attach a dumb terminzal to your serial line.
You might need to login to the console to do it, but i guess
thats no problem.

See also your /etc/inittab. There should be a line like:

s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 19200 ttyS0 vt100

commented out. Comment it in and it should work (that is: I did that
and I can login using an old XT-laptop with Procomm)

Count yourself lucky if you've completely avoided Windows all these years
and you don't know what I'm talking about. Most Linux software is, roughly
speaking, about where Windows software was 5 or 10 years ago.
It is very frustrating to know what you're missing. But if you must, check out:
www.blueprintsoftwareworks.com/pmmail/about.html
I'm not sure what would be more depressing, running it under Windows
2000, or running it under the much less capable Windows 95, which
despite being 6 years old is still ahead of Linux in most ways. Sigh.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Scrumpy)
Subject: tar backup via NFS excluding NFS mount point
Date: 29 Mar 2001 17:52:17 GMT

Linux Newbie here :)
I'm about to backup a Linux installation using tar to an NFS mount point
called /cdrom. /cdrom links to an NFS server on another PC on my home
network.

The syntax I'm thinking of using is:

tar --exclude /cdrom -c -z -f /cdrom/slakhdb2ext2.tar /

My aim is;
a) a complete backup of / with all sub-directories and files but of course
excluding the NFS mount point /cdrom and;
b) preserve permissions in case I need to restore and;
c) to save space on the target by using compression (not bzip2 as it takes
too long).

Will the above syntax achieve my aims?

Will tar preserve permissions by default i.e. without adding any specific
option(s)?

I'm not sure if I've got the NFS mount point /cdrom excluded properly from
the tar command and the NFS server PC contains many gigs of data!

Looking forward to receiving your constructive comments.

Tks, Scrumpy

Yes, but note that if you unpack on another machine some of the user
or group ids may not exist.

You can always type Ctrl-C to abort the operation. Add the -v option
that will list the files as they are added to the archive, so you can
see whether /cdrom is skipped or not.

Let's just think about this for a second...

Linux - Explicit permissions-based, high-availability system on which, if
you're clever, not ONE service need run with root privilege.

Windows ME (&98, 95) - No user or file-auditing facility, Windows Scripting
Host running by default with full access to the system, no restrictions on
what can and cannot be done by a given user etc etc etc ...

Let's see ... which is more secure?

It's annoying that people use the number pad. Why do they do it? There
are perfectly good numbers on the first row, where you don't have to
move your hands to get to them. What is the number pad FOR? Do windows
users think that a computer is some sort of calculator?

I'm very happy that the numlock key (or whatever it is. Scrllck?) is
off. I don't know what's on my numberpad (gets up and walks across the
room to find a keyboard with one, the three at my side don't have one ..)
but I'm sure it's better the way it is with numbers OFF! Euuuwwwww ..
it's the cursor pad! Why didn't you say so! Of course I don't want that
emitting numbers! How would I navigate around my editor?

I don't know, what about tcsh? I.e., what's the point of your question?

To a rough approximation, tcsh is to csh what bash is to sh (or ash)
-- just as bash is a more featureful version of the Bourne shell, tcsh
is a more featureful version of the C shell.

Tcsh and bash are completely independent shells. Different code base,
different syntax, etc.

Why does everybody in this NG want to totally strip his /boot directory?
We're talking about 1MB or so, _including_ the kernel.

The internet is a too slow way of doing things you'd never do without
