No.
1) Debian maintainers _fix_ bugs when possible.
2) Debian tries very hard not to include buggy versions of packages in the
stable distribution. Every package spends a long time in 'unstable',
where it gets used and debugged by the daring (which includes Debian's
500 or so maintainers).
3) Many bugs are not in the packages as provided by the upstream
maintainers, but are due to distribution errors such as buggy install
scripts and default configurations, library problems, and the like.
Creating a distribution is not a simple matter of stuffing a kernel and
a bunch of packages onto a CD and shipping it.

2.2r2 comes with 2.2.17, I believe. You can. of course, install whatever
kernel you want.
> That's one way to stay stable. Just don't change anything.
If you like the bleeding edge, try Debian/unstable. 2.4 kernels, XFree
4.01, Gnome 1.2, 5000 other packages. If you can't quite handle that,
there's Debian/testing: everything that has spent two weeks bug-free in
unstable and has no unsatisfied dependencies. If you are running a server,
though, stick with stable, because that is what it is. It gets only
security and other critical bug fixes (available over the Net, of course).

You are very confused. Root is a personality, not a window manager.

Hello,
some user are excluded per default from login via ftp, for good reasons....
>cat /etc/ftpusers
#
# ftpusers This file describes the names of the users that may
# _*NOT*_ log into the system via the FTP server.
# This usually includes "root", "uucp", "news" and the
# like, because those users have too much power to be
# allowed to do "just" FTP...
#
root
...
You should not use ftp as root! Use scp instead...
If you want to enable it, remove root from the above file and restart your
ftpd, normally via inetd.
Good luck

Hello,
no problem, just setup your squid.conf the right way and restart squid via
it's init script
(SuSE) /sbin/init.d/squid...
You should have some lines in squid.conf like:
acl localhost src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.255
acl MyEthernet src 192.168.0.99-192.168.0.100/255.255.255.0
http_access allow MyEthernet
http_access deny all !localhost !MyEthernet
icp_access allow MyEthernet
icp_access deny all !localhost !MyEthernet
For easy setup look out for webmin or use swat, but configure it propably,
to only allow access to it from one box.
Better, read the docs that come with squid...:-)
Good luck

Im using SuSe 6.4, and i lately i used kppp. and i dont understand because when
i press on query modem it says modem ready but the modem doesnt send any
information because since i get a blank screen after the query is done (nothing
in after any AT1). but i can see the lights in the modem reacting when i press
'query modem'. and the strange thing is that kppp gives the same result when i
turn off the modem, it still says modem ready and give the same result
(blank)...when i use dial from kppp, it says modem ready and i see the lights
in the modem changing, but its stuk in expecting OK...and then it stops.
I think the modem is broke because i couldnt make it work under windows
neither, after installing the drinver, i try to connect and it says the modem
is not responding...so i will check on that first....but thanks for the reply
...next time i will give more details in the question.

You might want to do the above as root to install it as a system wide
executable.
You maight also want to look at the RPM version.

I am pleased that I have
overcome this issue and here are my conclusions.
My previous raid configuration was set up using CHS method for
harddisk geometry. There was no reason for doing this other than it
was a part of the diagnostic procedure for a previous issues regarding
a western digital harddrive that identifies itself to the tyan bios as
being ata66 but really only operates reliably at ata33. The CHS really
had nothing to do with the timing issue, but I suspect that the
partition table arrangement did. The symptom of this timing issue was
not being able to reliably modify the harddrive's partition tables,
strangely enough. Mandrakeuser.org has the write up about certain
western digital harddrives that have this issue.
When using CHS, the block arrangement for the boot partitions on both
the drives is different that with LBA. LBA arranges partition sizes
equally. I am not 100% certain, but this is the only change that I
implemented that made the difference. It might explain why when both
drives were installed that the system booted, but when either was
removed, it would not boot.
Using LBA translation method in both the BIOS and with fdisk using
matching LBA geometries, I can now boot from either drive- the way
raid1 is meant to be . . .
Other Details:
I am using kernel 2.2.18 with all the patches and recommendations that
Godfrey Livingstone provided.
All is well with this and I will be doing benchmarks at 32k size
chunks shortly.
I am using lilo 21.5 and a single lilo.conf.
Here are my partition arrangements OLD and NEW:

Subject: kernel question

Hi
Does compiling and intalling a new kernel version and its modules change
anything in the /dev directory, so that going back to the old version
becomes problematic?

Subject: mp3 files under SUSE 70 with ESS688 soundcard
Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2000 08:09:47 +0000 (UTC)
I have installed SUSE 7.0 on a Compaq Deskpro 5120. The Soundcard is a
ESS688 audiodrive. I have installed it manually using YAST2 under ESS688
Audiodrive. I can play WAV and audio-cd files but mp3 doesn't work. Does
anybody know what's wrong ?
Thank you in advance for your help
