All of the above. Every blocking package out there tends to block huge
numbers of sites that _shouldn't_ reasonably be blocked under the settings
they have, while simultaneously allowing through the majority of the
material that should be blocked. And they also have a nasty tendency to
block sites that don't at all fit the categories. For example, peacefire.org
has reviews and analysis of the blocking packages, and every one of the
blocking packages blocks it under all categories even though Peacefire's
pages contain _no_ material that would legitimately qualify under any
of their categories. If you want, check Slashdot's Your Rights Online
section for several pieces on blocking software ( censorware it's often
called ), including a number that hard numbers for what's blocked that
shouldn't be and what's not blocked that should.

No, your problem is probably that "vim" is a symbolic link to "gvim",
the graphical version of vim, while "vi" is a symbolic link to "vim57"
or whatever the text-mode version of vim is actually called. (A couple
of RedHat versions did this, for some reason.)
vim does not require color to work and will run even if the terminal
emulator is running in vt100 mode. However, vim will not work if the
terminal emulator is emulating a "glass tty" which might be the case if
you're using a brain-damaged Telnet client like TELNET.EXE. TERM should
be set to "linux" or "xterm-color" if your Telnet client can handle
those modes, or "vt220" if it can't handle those but can do some color,
or "vt100" if it won't work any other way.
If you must have gvim, you'll need to have an X-server running on the
machine you're telnetting from, and you'll need to export DISPLAY=<IP
addr of machine you're telnetting from>:0 before starting gvim.

It boggles my mind: there must be *so many* compromised systems out
there. I get 4 - 5 scans a day for windows netbios ports, and maybe 2 a
day for portmapper. And to think how much cable and ADSL subscribers
there are...
I'm curious: let's say a government system wants to just deny all access
from (e.g.) the entire 24. netblock. What is the lowest level they can
do this at? Could even the telco's routers become overwhelmed by a DDOS
attack?

I downloaded the rpm package and got this error as well.
I am running SuSE Linux 7.0 Professional
I did this
rpm -U -vv --ignorearch rp8_linux20_libc6.i386.cs1.rpm
after changing a few of the underlines to .
This didn't work. I then downloaded from another sites, one from Germany,
the previous one was from San Francisco. I was able to install with that
one. With the one from San Francisco I had a cpio error with the override.
With the one from Germany I had no problem. As to why the different architechture
message, perhaps the morons at RealAudio think that RedHat is the only Linux
that exists. One would think that we are dealing with some morons in Redmond ...
After that RealAudio still didn't work.
in /etc/profile.local I changed
the following:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib/RealPlayer7"
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
to :
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib/RealPlayer8"
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
I also added :
REALPLAYER_HOME="/usr/lib/RealPlayer8"
export REALPLAYER_HOME
I logged out and back in and ran startx
I reloaded netscape with http://www.ckac.com/ckac.ram
Now it works the same as version 7.0 so it seems.
What exactly is the difference?
There is still no way to put bookmarks that I can see as there is
on the winblows version.

Kernel 2.4 should have shown up in December, 2000, but it look like it
will be showing up in the beginning of 2001.

How do you "run X or Gnome"? Are you typing something into the Xterm you
got?
I run Gnome by putting this in ~/.Xclients:
/usr/bin/startgnome
You might need a 'local/' in there too. But ~/.Xclients has to be
executable.
Your XF86Config file does not contain one critical crumb of info: To what
file does the link /etc/x11/X point to?
And how many pixels across and up is your screen? If you bang
<Ctrl+Alt+Keypad Plus> or <Ctrl+Alt+Keypad Minus> does it get bigger or
smaller? (These are signs of XF86Config health...)

You are simply telling echo to literally echo the word date. What you want to
do is have echo print the output of a command. I think something like:
echo `/bin/date`
will do what you want.

Subject: How to get CPU usage
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 10:56:35 -0800
I need a way other than the top program to get the percent of CPU being
used. I've tried procinfo but it always reports somthing like:
user : 0:15:30.25 0.1% page in : 204585 disk 1: 88679r
309817w
nice : 0:01:01.31 0.0% page out: 380836
system: 0:12:46.50 0.1% swap in : 880
idle : 7d 21:01:42.29 99.7% swap out: 1099
uptime: 7d 21:31:00.34 context : 6705462
The user and system percents are always 0.1%, but in top they're always
changing (different percentages) so procinfo must not be working right.
Is there another program on a linux system that will show me the current
CPU stats? I've also looked in the /proc directory but couldn't find
anything with cpu info, except one file called cpuinfo but it didn't
have anything relating to usage.
I'm using it for a Perl script where I need to get the current CPU usage
percents, or find a raw number in a file somewhere and convert it to a
percent, and save it to a variable. Right now I'm using top but it
takes too long to start, get the output and search through it so it's
slowing down my script.
I'm running Mandrake Linux 7.2
Any help is much appreciated.

operates allright as a cd reader on my Red HAT 6.0 linux system (Kernel
2.2.5-15). The "SETUP" phasis goes OK. If I choose "Master CD" with a
few Mb of data to burn into a cdrom, the image goes allright... even the
cdburning seems to go allright : no error messages or anything.
However, when I try to verify the burnt cd, I am being told that :
"The "TOC" (table of contents) of this CD reports an impossible track
size. This can be a bug in the cdrom firmware, or a defect on a non
standard CD. Please try another CD-ROM drive, or forget your idea to
copy this CD..."
I have, of course, tried on more than one CD, which CDs I had previously
checked using same cd burner on Windows environment and Windows driver.
I have tested CD mastering with little data (about 20 Mb), and with
more data (about 200 Mb), I tested the default unix system for cdrom
files, as well as the msdos system... to no avail... always the same
result and error messages. As far as burning speed is concerned, I
started with speed 2, then speed 1, then speed zero ! I check the
image contents each time, and it seems allright...
Thanks for any hint on what might have gone wrong.
