Thanks a lot Kristian. I've been looking for this myself as I found the

Try the mozilla web browser. Netscape 6.0 was built off mozilla milestone
18, but mozilla realised a updated version mozilla 0.6 what is a lot better.

Without a more specific error message, it's hard to say. Make sure that
you've installed the Mach64 X server.

setenv TERM to something that doesn't say it has colorization; like
"vt100". Or tell whatever you are using to not use colours. I presume
you are talking about "ls"? Man ls. Option -o.

Why would anyone say "ugh" about tcsh? Or are you really meaning "csh"?
In that case, I can understand it, because csh is to tcsh as sh is to
bash. You should use tcsh (it's STILL a much better shell than bash,
despite bashes years of playing at catch-up).

On Redhat based distros, look for libstdc++-2.9.0-30.i386.rpm, on Debian
look for libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1.

I don't think that what the instruction say is relavent here. As you
have a recent distribution, you will be using ELF everywhere, except
perhaps some compatability libraries. Have you got all of the X
Windowing System development files installed, as well as X itself? You
probably have one or more X development packages (on Debian 2.2, the X
libraries are in xlib6g, the development headers and symlinks in
xlib6g-dev).

Yup. Like sperl or similar solutions; I know that.
But that still leaves the real question unanswered: Is there any
reason to make use of a setUID script, if taking into account the
numerous security risks that they might bear? After all, a C wrapper
isn't the only solution; sudo or even su in a sshd session would
do it as well.

Argh. Yes, that's nasty. I'd think they'd at least tell that in the
supplied documentation in the new release. Obviously, they've gotten
into similar working habits as MS.

Yawn.

Please use Deja.com. This question has really been answered
to hell and back. The ext2 filesystem on the 32-bit Intel platform does
not support files larger than 2GB without specific patches being
applied. Lookout for the LFS patches.

hello.

i installed slackware7.1 which has the 2.2.16 kernel.
and lilo in MBR, which worked ok.

but after i make a new kernel (2.2.18) i can't run lilo anymore.
it complains something about cyl 1438>1024 i think.
i tried installing the new 21.6.1 lilo, but it won't
build. i get 4 errors, same with 21.5.

funny, what does that have to do with which kernel i use?
why did it work ok with 2.2.16??

i was hoping to set up a streaming server capable of multiple
independent streams, where each user would be able to control their
playlist (hense their individual stream) via a web interface.

the best candidate for the server seems to be icecast. it must be
capable of multiple streams, although the documentation is sparse.

i had more trouble looking for a good web interface that does what i
want. here are some of the choices i found:

bbjuke at http://www.bb-zone.com/BBJuke/
streamcast at ftp://ftp.cheapnet.net/pub/streamcast/README
webshout at http://code.werken.com/webshout/
vibecast at http://www.brentwoodradio.com/

has anyone done anything similar? what is the best combination of
software?

Take a look at the Beowulf howtos and documentation.

Typically, you want a front-end or gateway machine with full security
and a back-end machine with less security (to make transaction
processing faster.

You can create rhosts and ~/.rhosts files on each user's home on the
back-end system.

You can also use NIS and Netgroups which will allow you to set up
groups which allow only specific users from specific machines to
issue requests without a full authentication. You can also set up
firewall software that will only allow connections from your gateway
hosts.

For a bit more transparent authentication, you can use Kerberos
and LDAP (the real ones not Active Directory) and have a security
server manage access control for all systems. The user establishes
an identity on the gateway server, and the back-end servers can
trust the identity (using Kerberos tickets) but perform access
checking on each resource before it is used (typically on the Open
or connect request).

You can have transparant security without giving up security. Again,
a review of the Beowulf and PAM documentation is in order.

The problem isn't that there is no way to do what you want. The
problem is that there are many ways to get the effect you want while
still having a secure system. You need to review the documentation
to see which is the best fit.

You may want to get a Linux Consultant or a UNIX security consultant
to assist you in this matter if one is available in your area. Some
may even be willing to consult via e-mail at a reduced rate. Some can
even do the configuration for you via remote connection (which you
will seal shut once he's done.

I'm currently running a system that has 3 boxs connected to the linux
box running ip-masqerading.
It all works great. My new issue is that I would like an external
machine from the internet to be able to connect to my linux box (the
linux box now runs apache web server with mysql and php). I read the
IP-Masq- HOWTO (forwarders section) which explains exactly how to do
this for kernal 2.2.X. According to the HOWTO it is done with ipmasqadm

portfw (a couple of lines to add to the rc.firewall). But this is not
working for me. Am I missing something? BTW I'm running RedHat 6.2,
kernel 2.2.14.

Any info would be appreciated. If you could let me know here and/or by

If you're using ipchains, you don't need to use the proxy. (that is, you
don't need to use squid.) If I were you (I assume you're the only user,
and there are only 2 computers) I would forget about routing, proxying, or
whatever. I'd simply use masquerading through ipchains, and nothing else.

If you're using ipchains, configure your #1 computer with a default gateway
(aka static route) set to be the internal IP address of your #2 computer.
When you open netscape, remove all proxy information.

If you are unsure how to start ipchains in such a manner as to control all
of your masquerading, read the document IP-Masquerading-HOWTO. You can
find the HOWTOs at a thousand locations. One of which is
http://www.linuxdoc.org

One more comment: If you upgrade to the 2.4 kernel sometime in the future,
ipchains is replaced with a new mechanism. You can bet that ipchains will
still work, but the newer tool is significantly better. I don't know
anything more about the newer one.

I agree with everyone else -- It's a terrible idea to eliminate passwords,
in nearly all situations. However, if you really know what you're doing
(which you probably don't, if you asked this question) then...
Simply edit your /etc/passwd file (or /etc/shadow) and remove the jibberish
that comes in between the first : and the second : characters.

I would like to do some processing on audio data (using a sound card
compatible with Linux) in realtime. How do I obtain the raw audio data using
Redhat Linux?

Best regards,

Perhaps our friend is not accustomed to compiling on an intel platform .

Install telnet-server. I believe it's on the 2nd cd, or look for it on
http://rufus.w3.org.

inetd has been replaced with xinetd. There is an /etc/xinetd.conf file
and a directory /etc/xinetd.d directory, which contains a separate file
for each service xinted manages. Once you install telnet-server you will
see a file "telnet" in this directory. You may need to edit this file.

Check the permissions on /tmp/.font-unix is set to 1777 then restart
the font server:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart

Then try "startx"
