There's no need to edit configure files. You just have to set one
environment variable - CXXFLAGS. Personally, I compile KDE every couple of
days, so here's a little script I use:

==========8<===============
#!/bin/sh

source /opt/kde2/bin/kde2
set -x
#########################################################################
export CXXFLAGS="-fno-exceptions -O3 -mpentium"
#
PACKAGES="kdesupport kdelibs kdebase kdeadmin kdegames kdegraphics
kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdeutils kdepim kdetoys koffice kdenonbeta
kde-i18n"

Opts=""
Keep=""
for i in $PACKAGES
do
    if [ "$i" = "kdebase" ] || [ "$i" = "kdeadmin" ]; then
        Opts=" --with-pam=kde "
    elif [ "$i" = "kde-i18n" ]; then
        Opts=" --prefix=/opt/kde2 "
    else
        Opts=""
    fi

    if [ "$i" = "kdesupport" ] || [ "$i" = "kdelibs" ]; then
        Keep=""
    else
        Keep=" -k "
    fi

    if [ -d $i ] ; then
        cd $i
    else
        continue
    fi

    case "$1" in
        clean)
            make -k clean;make -k distclean
            ;;
        make)
            make -f Makefile.cvs && ./configure $Opts && make $Keep
            ;;
        makeinst)
            make -f Makefile.cvs && ./configure $Opts && make $Keep
            make $Keep install
            ;;
        install)
            make $Keep install;
            ;;
        verify)
            make $Keep ; sleep 1
            ;;
        *)
            echo "Usage: $0 {clean|make|makeinst|install|verify}"
            exit 1
    esac
    cd ..
done
==========8<===============

You have to run it as root.

To download the sources from the CVS I use the following:

Create a file named .cvsrc (mind the dot) in root's home directory and put
in these lines:
cvs -z4 -q
diff -u3 -p
update -dP
checkout -P

Then in a console do:
# export CVSROOT=:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs
# cvs login
Press <Enter> when it asks for password

# for i in kdesupport kdelibs kdebase kdeadmin kdegames kdegraphics
kdenetwork kdemultimedia kdepim kdeutils kdetoys kdenonbeta koffice
kde-i18n/he kde-i18n/ru; do cvs up $i; done

The above line has to be one long command. When running this command for
the first time, change "cvs up" (update) to "cvs co" (checkout).
I use Hebrew and Russian translations for apps, change this as appropriate
or delete.

Good luck!

I'm totally new to Linux... so I don't know where to find my XF86Config file,
and it's a bit hard for me to navigate as I often can't se the lower parts of
a window. Would you (or somebody else) tell me how to find it? If it isn't too
difficult maybe how to manipulate the file in textmode.

Unfortunately this didn't work.

Obviously. If you don't want to use a FS for this info,
you will have to do some if it yourself

You can't. (Unless filename.txt contains an FS)
You can only mount a filesystem. Not a raw device

use dd, tar, cpio
With tar you don't need to remember the size either.
(BTW I don't know cpio, it may be equally usable as tar)

Hi,

I get this weird error when I try to start a graphical application on
the server after logging in with ssh:

channel 0: istate 4 != open
channel 0: ostate 64 != open
X connection to my.host.name:11.0 broken (explicit kill or server
shutdown).

I did enable XForwarding in sshd_config and I login with
ssh -X my.host.name
so XForwarding is supposed to work, but it doesn't. What can be wrong?

Thanks

Hello,

I've used Linux Napster client v1.4 for a week.
Everything worked well. But now...suddenly..without changing anything
to the settings, I can start the client but it doesn't seem to
connect.

After I've tried the "/reconnect" command, I got this the message

The nr. of total songs & total Gb remains '0'. After waiting for about
10 mins and trying several search-actions without any result there
seems to be no reaction.

I've already tried to create a new user and reinstalled all the files
but the result remains the same.

I'm using the Napster client on Red Hat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.18) and it's

The error message is 'unable to read partition table'......maybe it
can't read one b/c there isn't one in the first place? (ie. there is no
disk in the drive)

yes, it takes the load off the CPU. Using software decoding a PII (maybe
even a PIII) is recommended. Using a decoder card u ucan use a low end
PII w/o slow down problems.

it can. Only a few cards are supported. I know the Creative Labs dxr2 is

Are these necessary ?
What do they do ?
Can I remove them ?
How?

The actual _output_ of "df" would have been helpful.
My guess: You've been running out of inodes on the /var
filesystem, therefor no new files can be stored on it
anymore. In this case, you're a bit out of luck. You'll
have to reformat the partition with a different inode
setting.

Hi,

I have installed RedHat 7.0 and LILO (not in the MBR). I have also Win2k and
in this bootloader I have a RedHat option. When I choose this I get a
graphic screen for LILO and if I press Ctrl+X I exit this. OK so far.

Today I have compiled the new kernel (2.4.0) and have edit the
/etc/lilo.conf file and run /sbin/lilo and getting:

Added linux
Added linux-test *
Added LinuxTest
Added win

But still I can't get anymore option in the LILO boot menu (text or graphic
boot menu). Therefore Linux still boot on the old kernel. It seems that LILO
igores the config file?!

Questions
1. How can I append LILO boot options?
2. how can I get rid of the graphic LILO screen?

I don't know what these are, but they look suspicious to me. On the
face of it, they look like they're to do with printing a binary file
to your printer, but that would be rather strange.

This is a Red Hat Linux machine, right? There have been several
remote exploits of such machines over the past few months, including
lpr and rpc services. Have you kept up to date with security updates
of these packages? If not, there's a high probability that your
machine has been compromised.

You are certainly correct about this. It probably started at about the
same instant that I logged in at run level 5 for the first time. The
funny thing is that none of my other users (including root) have this
problem. I checked their ~/.gnome directory and none of them have the
magicdev file in there at all. Why did I get stuck with one? I must have
done something to get it, but I have no idea what.

One possibility is that I used linuxconf to give myself a non-root login
(create new user), and linuxconf may have done it. I manually entered
the other users into /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and /etc/shadow, and then
I restored everything in /home from a backup tape. Probably entering a
login for myself with linuxconf did it.

The display managers (xdm, kdm, et al.) use .xsession for user
customised logins. Notes that this is an override for the default login
mechanism, so you'll need to launch the window manager from here as well
-- probably just need to copy .xinitrc to .xsession.

e.g. at work my .xsession looks like this:

#!/bin/sh

xscreensaver -nosplash &
xset b off
if [ -x "$(which wmaker)" ]; then
  exec wmaker
else
  exec /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession gnome
fi

(Window Maker actually has autostart and exit scripts that are invoked
by the WM when you login -- maybe icewm has an autostart feature
independent of the xsession mechanism).

Hey--

I'm in a class where my teacher reccomends using tcsh, so all her

She wants a command that is an alias that will change the directory and
then do an ls. It is called 'cdl'. I need to be able to do 'cdl

make a bash function called cdl.

cdl () { cd $1; ls; }
