If you look through the gnome configuration menus somewhere is a window
that lets you set whether gnome should automount CDs or even autorun
programs on them. If you uncheck those boxes your 'problem' may go
away. But I don't think those dmsg messages about disk change are logged
anyway, but when I was running gnome, I certainly unchecked that box to
autorun a CD.

There was a strong deist influence, at the very least.

In case you hadn't noticed, Windows itself is not too bright either about
removed or relocated drives or partitions. Check your Linux partition
types with Linux fdisk and make sure that any primary (not extended) or
logical partitions are appropriately type Linux or Linux swap.

In Windows Control Panel, System, Devices remove any bogus disk devices
and your CD drive. Reboot and Windows should automatically find the
drives where they are supposed to be now. It should never see your Linux
partitions at all unless they are (or were) an incorrect type.

Apparently, you haven't typed what you think you've typed.

The error message that bash is giving you says that you called a file
"./home/pargoo/.bashrc", which is not the same as "/home/pargoo/.bashrc".
It looks like you're missing the space between the "." and the "$HOME".

BTW, BASH_ENV is only used for shell scripts, not read for interactive
scripts, which automatically read .bashrc unless it's a login shell.

You have to rerun lilo after making any changes. Type '/sbin/lilo' while
logged in as root.

You could try Xconfigurator (comes with RH), runs in the text mode, and
creates the XF86Config file for you. But I just doubt that the level of
XFree86 that shipped with RH 6.0 would support your laptop anyway. Your
best shot is RH 6.2 or RH 7.0.

Somewhere on your system is a directory which has thousands of entries in
it. You might write a little shell script which counts the directory
entries (don't forget to make it executable):

    echo -n "$1 "; ls $1 | wc -w

and run it against all the directories on your system with a find command:

  find / -type d -exec ./counter.sh {} \; | more

I saw a note about a similar situation recently, but I forget where the
note said that the files were being created.

Yes, and the biggest class of programs to use this "feature" is
the whole range of windows virii.

YOu call it three, I call it one. I tend to rung what most would call
a vanalla X desktop but I have installed a number of Gnome and KDE
apps which run quite happily.

> is this really possible to do?

Gnome uses CORBA for this task and KDE has a way of doing it as
well. There is talk of making both these desktop ebviroments use
the same inter-app communication model.

IMHO this "feature" is mostly bogus.

Its not an Xlib thing. Its done at a higher level.

The boot sector on a CD is hidden from the file system, so if you just
copy the file system with your CD copying utilities, you don't get a
bootable cd.

In linux, you can create a CD image (which contains all of the sectors,
including the boot image).

  dd if=/dev/hdc of=cdimage.img

(Of course, you need to put the correct device in for your cdrom device.)

Then you can burn that image with cdrecord (in linux) or if you haven't
figured out how to use your cd burner in linux, put the cdimage file
on a windows partition and burn it with the windows software, selecting
the option that lets you burn a previously-created image.

Lame EXCUSE

You're telling me that even though scan-tron machines are prevelant
in every single school in the country, they're suddenly prohibitively
expensive when sold with voting software?

I don't buy it.

Especially not when a man CONVICTED of multiple felony counts of
ballot-tampering for the benefit of Democrat candidates explained
fully well that the whole strategy revolves around the tamperability
of punch-card ballots.
