Do you have the ide-tape support included at all? Is there
new source for the SCSI emulation that supports these drives
better than what I have with kernel 2.0.34?
I'm considering going to kernel v2.2.x but am reluctant to
make any major system changes until I get a reliable backup.

Even though I=B4ve got a differnet mother-board (DFI .., AGP Matrox G200,=
AHA2940 - disks, dds1-dc, cdrom) Kernel paging errors occure sometimes
upon loading of the bttv driver.
Did you try other FSB clock rates?
With my K6-2 400 it is impossible to compile the kernel with FSB 100MHz
(no go at 400, 350, 300 - errors: sig 11 - sig 6). Kernel compile is
ok at any FSB 95Mhz rate. (428, 380, 333). But now I=B4ve some trouble
compiling the QT library (sig 11 :-(( at 95 MHz FSB). Perhaps its a good
idea to replace the processor. Mine has production lable (below voltage
infos) A 9849 EPFW.

I think problem here is not whether you can release that code or not,
but whether you can debug the connection or not (and you have already
done that).
As far as I know, even reverse engineering is legal in Europe, whenever
it is used to make two systems compatible. I think you did not use
reverse engineering and you wanted your card to be compatible with
Linux, and that means it is legal.
However, I am not a lawyer, so please do not quote on me.

First is you cable modem ISA and is it PnP? If it is not ISA then the
PCI probes should have found it. If it is isa and not pnp you'll need
to check what configuration it has.

I doubt if that would work. The 'cgi=3D' requires a URL path (and=20
Content-type: which you do have in the script). You could use a shell=20
path with 'cmd=3D' (no Content-type req'd), but that is more complicated=
=20
if your web path has a different root and might not work with the=20
apache suexec option. See my SSI FAQ for more.

Subject: Can't log in as 'root' all of a sudden...
Date: 07 Feb 1999 08:02:56 PST
Hello,
I have a bit of a problem here, and Im hoping someone can help me out.
Basically, I suddenly cant log in to my system as root, and thats the
only one that
can run X or do anything useful.
I have a RedHat 5.1 system running with Afterstep, Gnome 99.1, Corel WP,
etc.
Ive been running as root most of the time, even though I know youre not
supposed
to. It was hard enough to get everything setup and running without trying
to get
things running for a user account just for me. Enough justification.
I was curious to see how the old user account ken looked, since I havent
even logged
in as that in well over a month and a half, so I did, and it wouldnt let me
startx something
about not having root permission, where before I could startx at will, it
just had different
desktop settings, menu choices, etc. (Might it have something to do with
removing and then
reinstalling all of the Gnome RPMs?) So, I did su root and entered my
password and
started X no problem but it was clearly running as root. I did some
surfing and email,
and (foolishly) started FileRunner (which I think is great). I selected the
. file entry and
ran chmod set to change all permissions to read, write, execute and to do it
recursively.
Theoretically this would make every file on the system available to anyone.
Probably
dumb, but its just me anyway.
That eventually gave me an error saying /proc didnt exist or something, but
X kept running
fine. After a while I decided to restart X from a root login to be more
efficient. I quit X and
did a logout from the ken account. At the prompt I entered root and
then my password, the
one Ive been using with Linux from the get-go back in November. It said
incorrect login.
I tried it again, more carefully. Same result. Over and over. I did a
power off reboot still the same.
I cant for the life of me figure out how my root password got
changed/corrupted, or how to
get it all back to the way it was (whats a backup?).
Can you help me?
Im having to send this via Win95, BTW. Eeeeewww!
If you want to scold or lecture me about following proper system procedures
along with your
solution I promise Ill read and heed every word.
Thanks,
Ken Howells

Download kernel version 2.2.1 and compile it yourself. It has support for
many different sound cards. While you are configuring the kernel, it will
ask you what kind of sound card you have.

A more thorough explanation of this was provided by a Dilbert book. (Not
quite sure which one. Probably the Dilbert Principle.)
The rule is to apply mathmatical rules to trite comments.
Knowledge is Power
Time is Money
and as every engineer knows,
Power is Work over Time.
So, substituting algebraic equations for these time worn bits of
wisdom, we get:
K = P (1)
T = M (2)
P = W/T (3)
Now, do a few substitutions:
Put W/T in for P in equation (1), which yields:
K = W/T (4)
Put M in for T into equation (4), which yields:
K = W/M (5).
Now we've got something. Expanding back into English, we get:
Knowledge equals Work over Money.
What this means is that:
1. The More You Know, the More Work You Do, and
2. The More You Know, the Less Money You Make.
The actual article goes on a bit further, but you get the idea

You need to upgrade dhcpcd to version 1.3.x. The old one, version 0.70.x
does not work with the newer kernels. By the way, have a look at the Changes
file in the Documentation-catalog in the kernel-source. It describes a number
of other packages you should upgrade while you're at it.
