zip and unzip are part of the RedHat distro.

Are you using JDK/JRE 1.3_01 ?
If yes... it _may_ be the same problem as

I have RedHat 7, and recently installed KDE 2.0.1.
When I browse in Netscape, Java enhanced web pages run Java applets/scripts
without problems. Konqueror, however, is unable to display wab pages that
have Java applets.
I enabled the Java/JavaScript in Konqueror Browser setting.
I have "Automatically detect Java" checked, but this doesn't work.
I tried "Use user-specified Java", but the path is set to /usr/lib/jdk, but
this directory doesn't exist.
Why does Java work in Netscape, but not in Konqueror?!

Here's a direct quote from KDE support web site.
12.3. Killing windows in KDE
There is a standard keybinding (Ctrl+Alt+Esc) that gives you a
skull/crossbones cursor. Click that cursor on a window to kill it. The
keybindings are viewable/changeable from the KDE Control Center in KDE
above version 1.0.

If you don't have xkill on the app bar at the bottom, here's how to add
it:
Right-click on the bar, select from the pop-up menu "add" then "legacy
application",
browse to /usr/X11R6/bin and select xkill, select a nice icon for it,
and you're set to go.

NS has built-in java (one of the reasons it's so big); to use it in Konq
you have to add an external java interpreter, such as jre 1.3 from Sun.
Go download it from http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/; beware, it's a
big download, 15M or so.

I have done the said upgrade; just download the current d/glibc.tgz
(also, doesn't hurt to upgrade a/glibcso.tgz and d/glocale.tgz), then
use upgradepkg on them. :) Easy and painless.

I got an Epson Stylus Color 760 and I'm using the uniprint driver from gs. As
far as the documentation tells, this is a rather good supported model. So
there must be a misconfiguration in gs. I installed the 740p.upp via
lprsetup, as described in the support data base from www.suse.de. I really
understand enough to edit the .upp or the /etc/apsfilterrc files...and there
is no hint in the sdb from SuSE. So what can I do?

Not true! Look at the other branch of this thread in which the OP and I
go back and forth with shell scripts to do what the OP wants: given a
partially qualified filename, generate the filename with the full path.
This is NOT what locate does if there are several files with the same
basename (e.g., Makefile or README).

I don't know why it's needed, but I do recall similar perceived need
under DOS/Windows.

I downloaded and installed the j2sdk-1_3_0-linux-rpm.bin.
I set the path to /usr/java/jdk1.3/jre, but this almost works.
I checked "Show Java Console" option.
Any Java enhanced web page opens a Java Console window, and I get error
messages displayed in the Java Console.
Any other suggestions?

Christians, as you might expect, would disagree.

And although I'm nothing even vaguely resembling a Christian, I tend
to agree with them a lot more often than not. They're about the only

Today, we have no morality - only the rule of powerful people, falsely

I used ftape to access a TR3 streamer more than a year ago, but I don't

something the backup program has to take care of.

I was messing around with some alpha software and it appears to have
had an effect on my ability to start up x. I am running red hat 6.1.
The error message looks somewhat like this:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xlbcomp) reports: Errors:
                bad length in Geometry
                Output File "/var/tmp/server-0.xkm Removed

Part of me is suspicious that the software over ran the /tmp file, but
rebooting does not fix the problem and I thought that would flush /tmp.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

I'm running a Samba server V2.0.7 based on RH6.2 since quite a long time.
It works great together with my Windows 2000 laptop.

Now I got a new laptop to connect running NT 4.0. From this laptop anything
on TCP/IP level works fine. Also I can browse the Samba server using the NT
command line tools (net use / net view).

As soon as I try to map a network drive using the explorer the systems
explorer hangs or gets very, very slow. The same happens when I try to
setup a Samba printer.

The same system also got a netware client installed because our company
runs Novell.

Is there anybody who already faced the problem and can help?

Thanks

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

May be you are right, Raid is probably what I am looking for.

I supposed RAID refer to mirroring (or striping) full disks nor just
some small partitions from one disk to another disk having completely
different geometry.

I do not have crashes. So long so good. But I had already a couple
heart crushes (using other OSs) because of hard disk failures. Most of
the trouble I had was around disks or blowers.

I am trying to prevent lots of work (I am still learning) reinstalling
a full Linux system. My idea is: in case one of the disks fail I will
swap the IDE cables and the other will take over.

If the small disk fails I will have everything in the other. If the
large disk fails I will just replace it, reset the data partition
restoring using a backup and resetting the OS partition mirrors.

As soon as I can I will buy another large disk and mirror everything.
I have the small disk since long ago.

If we have mirror of data and OS it is the best.

If we have backup of just the OS, it will take some time to restore
data, if some data loss is acceptable.

If we have mirror of data we may not loose anything but it will tale
long time to reset the OS even from tape (I think).

That is the reason why I am trying to make a mirror of the OS. Linux,
for me, is and will be for long, I am sure, voodoo. But I don't give
up.

There is a Howto at www.konqueror.com.

Take a look at

http://mobilix.org/apm_linux.html

for a good overview of this stuff for Linux...

I'm not sure how the RH 7 kernel is configured, with APM etc...

it is possible, depending on how your kernel is configured and what
hardware you have.

How is the colorization of the man pages under Red Hat (and misc. other
distributions) done?

The man pages themselves don't contain the formatting commands staticly.
So is there a modified version of man which parses and inserts the
colorization commands before sending the stuff to STDOUT/the pager?

Hi!

Up until recently, I was running the 2.2r0 Potato release. The day before
yesterday, I upgraded to one of the Woody releases and since then the
system hasn't been the same. I'm thinking that this can be a problem
generated by the fact that I didn't download the Woody upgrades directly,
but I used some packages that I had on a few cd's here. At any rate, ever
since the upgrade my soundcard has refused to have anything to do with
anyone except root.

Since I've got a Soundblaster PCI128, I decided to use the ALSA drivers to
get it up and running. No problems there, I downloaded the alsa packages
(driver, libs, utils) and compiled just fine. Then I installed and off i
went, everything was working great until I upgraded to Woody. Now the ALSA
drivers simply won't be available to the ordinary user, when I try to do
"amixer" with my usual account I get the following;

tjolle@willow:~$ amixer
The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.

Although, I do the same thing just after running su;

tjolle@willow:~$ su
Password:
willow:/home/tjolle# amixer
Group 'Input Gain',0
  Capabilities: volume mute jointly-mute Channels: Front-Left Front-Right
[..snip..]

Also, I thought I would include what it looks like when I try to run "gamix";

tjolle@willow:~$ gamix
probe.c 31: No ALSA device. main.c 29: Can not make mixer.

Now, all I want to know is; what gives? I mean, why the heck are my ALSA
drivers hiding from everyone except root? Could I mistakenly have
installed the ALSA debs when I upgraded the system? I had problems with
the included ALSA debs earlier, that's why I decided to compile them on my
own.

Thanks in advance,
Tobias Bengtsson
