Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 18:28:33 GMT
Hello all,
after some trouble with the X-server that came with my graphics card
(Yakumo Voodoo Rush 3D with Alliance Promotion AT25 chip) I upgraded
to the latest version 3.3.3.1 of Xfree86 X Window System. In contrast
to that server provided by my graphics card vendor the new XF86_SVGA
server detects the chipset and my font path and tries to start, but it
never gets past this:
XFree86 Version 3.3.3.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: December 29 1998
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages

xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server

My question: What does this Hung in ApmSync() mean? And how can this
problem be solved?
Thank you very much for any hint in advance!

Hello there,
I've got a problem i'm working on but i can't manage on my own. So i
thought there are probably people out there who might have the solution.
Here it is. I've got a whole bunch of files having names which most are
in upper case. So i would like them to be changed using a shell
script. Something which looks similar like this:
for i in *; do
mv $i `basename $i .`
done
Is there maybe a command which can do the translation from upper to
lower in one go?

You don't. The functions are in the libc. Just remove the -lresolve.

relevant section, then clip it and put it in ~/.Xdefaults.

Emacs does well editing files with international characters, using the
`leim' package. You can turn the composed character sets on/off in
each buffer with a keystroke, according to whether or not you need
them. It's much simpler than working the <ALT>-keypad trick.

Dump, tar, cpio all work to archive to tape or can be piped to
the corresponding restore either on the same machine or over
a network. Rsync works pretty well over a network or to
alternate disk partitions. 'Cp -a' works acros disk partitions
on the same machine and could probably work over NFS (but
I prefer rsync for network copies). None of these will make
the target disk bootable, but all you need is a boot floppy to
bring the machine up after transferring the filesystem contents
and then run lilo to make it bootable.

You are probably looking for "gramofile".

Subject: I need help with procmeter-2.5, please.
Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 18:50:30 +0100
Hi,
Anyone played with procmeter-2.5? I need to display saved data.
This is what i've done.
procmeter cpu -log cpu.data #This collects the data
mkfifo -m 777 cpupipe #Create named pipe
cat cpu.data > cpupipe
procmeter -data cpupipe
Then i get an error message, which follows:-
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
ProcMeter: Waiting for the file 'cpupipe.def' to appear.
If i try to run procmeter by itself, i don't get a problem at all. It
all looks really good.
Please help.
Simon Weller,
Cisco Systems.

I think I fixed my problem. I changed inetd.conf to run it "nowait"
instead of "wait", and I haven't had any problems since. :-)
