What did you do exactly? Did you use the --icmp-type option? Type
ipchains -h icmp for all valid icmp-types.

perhaps that helps?

Hi, I just came across this thread because I just installed
ReiserFS on my laptop. However, I cannot get the disk to spin
down. After reading through various archives I ended up on

Which basically confirms that it is hard to get long spindown times

I have a custom built AMD Athlon system with an Abit 7A-100 motherboard
(going from memory as I'm not at home) and an IBM 20Gb hard drive running
as an ATA100. The system was running fine for several months. I began to
install Linux by using the partitioning software that comes with it (not
PartitionMagic). I converted my 20Gb drive to a 15Mb and was going to use
the 5Gb for a Linux partition. I did not get to establish Linux on the new
partition. The system ran like this for a couple of weeks with no problems.
While I was out of town, something happened while a family member was using
the machine. They couldn't get it to boot. I suspect they put the Linux
boot floppy in the drive by mistake. Anyway, the result is that it will
boot from the floppy, but does not see the hard drive. It is as though the
hard drive doesn't exist. There are no error messages that would indicate a
hardware failure. Any thoughts? I also posted this on the WinME board.

Thanks!

Ask it why. Run it in verbose mode. It sounds like someone abruptly
messed up your DNS tables.

And as far as I know, qmail does not "forward". It receives incoming
mail and passes it on to a local delivery agent for local delivery,
or relays the mail to another server if the recipient is aliased
as foo@bar, or you have a virtualuser table saying that in general.

Eh? Raise the question on the qmail mailing lists. Obviously
more data is needed! Your configuration, for one, and what happens for
another.

Hi,

I'm running a RedHat7 fully updated, kernel 2.4.1. and I own a Cannon
BJC-2110 printer which I'm trying to use through the USB port. I have
support in my kernel for USB and when I boot up I can the USB-UHCI (I
think) is being used. when I try to configure my printer using
printtool it does not find any local printers, but I tell it that the
printer is under /dev/usb/lp0 and everything seems fine. the I restart
the lpd daemon and again everything seems fine. then I send a file to
be printed using lpr, and I monitor what's happening using lpq, and
what's happening is that it says the job is being "processed" and
that's it the printer never prints. I also tried to manually load some
modules like printer.o usbcore.o and usb-utci.o. some of them were
already loaded and it didn't help at all.

                                        any help would be appreciated.

p.s. the printer works under windows.

Does anyone know if the IDE ATAPI floppy driver in kernel 2.4.1 has support
for devfs? I am trying out a kernel with devfs comiled in, but i can't
seem to access my IDE zip drive. There are compatibility links to all my
other drives (hd, cd, scsi, fd) but none to what my zip device used to be.
I've tried searching for it in the /dev directory, but to no avail. So I
wonder: maybe the driver does not support devfs yet? If not, is this
being worked on?

Subject: unable to read partition table
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 10:57:57 -0500

After an accidental episode of file deletion from my home dir (by the Netscape 6
installer) and subsequent system lock-up (thanks to Netscape 6 spawning a
zillion pop-up error windows), and in combination with a power outage (caused by
a reflexive action on the part of my left foot against the surge protector)...
my system now refuses to boot properly, with the boot process reporting a
filesystem error, and dropping me into a shell.

System is an i686 running Redhat 6.1, and I have 2 SCSI disks.

Current status:

-From the shell, I see the root filesystem, but nothing under either /user,
/home or /home2

-e2fsck reports that sda is clean, but it can't open sdb, saying:
e2fsck: Device not configured while trying to open /dev/sdb1

-I can't find /var/log/syslog at all.

-dmesg reports a disk error:
(Repair filesystem)6 /bin/dmesg | more
...
Partion check:
sda: sda1 sda2 sda3 sda4 < sda5 sda6 sda7 >
sdb: SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 1 lun 0 return code =28000002
...
scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:10, sector 0
    unable to read partition table
...

-Perhaps I should add that there was a sym-link from my home dir (in sda3) to a
lot of Java stuff in home2 (in sdb1). I wonder if the NS6 installer may have
followed this sym-link and devoured everything in sdb1. (In general, I'm
confused as to whether the system won't boot, because necessary files have been
deleted, because of a filesystem error, or a combo of both.)

I'm not a hacker, and I've never had a problem booting Linux before, and I'm not
knowledgable about recovery issues...Much appreciate any advice!

This can help, but NOT a definite solution.

I have the same problem, or similar: ALSA for onboard
    VIA VT82C686 AC97 southbridge, module 'snd-card-via686a',
on Slackware-7.1 Linux. Because ALSA most developed in this case, even
supposed to have sound recording (this I know looking at C sources of
modules in different cases: not very impressive doc, but I understand.
At least there IS some drivers!)

For now, applications I tried that have ALSA interface for output of
sound are Ok. My son bought Myth II game, and no sound for now, not
having ALSA interface.

But in THIS case: MythII can use ESD (Enlightenment Sound ...), and
ESD can POSSIBLY use ALSA interfaces, from a vague rememberance of
something read on Internet.

More generally (possibly you know it): in ALSA doc, there is way to
make ALSA drivers 'kernel sound (free OSS?)' compatible.

I did NOT try it up to now, I will in some days (or weeks?).

And all above is for sound Output, I did not yet try sound recording
with this AC 97 Sound Onboard chip with ALSA driver.

By the way, I am somewhat with you concerning 'lost bandwith on Usenet':
this is far from abuse.

Not very definitive answer, but I hope this help,

Just a question or two.

1. Is your boot floppy a lilo boot floppy?
2. If so, can you boot Windows by typing in the right word at the
LILO: prompt?
3. What happens if you start the computer without the boot floppy
inserted?

If the answers to both #1 and #2 are "yes", then you may be able to
restore automatic booting of Windows in this way. Use the boot floppy to
boot windows. Go the "Run" selection on the start menu and run this in
Windows:

fdisk /mbr

This will restore to the first hard drive the code needed in the master
boot record to start Windows.

If the answers are not "yes", then post as much information as you can
about 1, 2, and 3 and some real guru may be able to help.

Didn't see any Howto's or much in Deja

I've got an all SCSI system with a 4mm tape drive, a Win95
partition and various unix partitions. I do all my backups
from Linux. I recently had an bad experience doing a total
restore of the Win95 partition and I lost all the long
file names. I had mounted the filesystem like "mount -t msdos"
and done a tar. This had always worked fine to restore
a directory here or a file there.

What's the best way to backup Win95 from Linux?

I know "dd" would work, but I want to be able to do individual
files as well as a bare metal restore.

Thanks for any pointers

For a file by file backup,
mount it as "vfat" . This allows you to see the long file names.
