Hmmm... This topic has wandered of line a little :o(
I have a working (at least it did once in the Linux box, I saw it) Grand Cam
Video capture card BTTV based, a good cam, Panasonic SVHS (broadcast
quality) what I don't have is the knowledge to get it running as a web cam
under Linux.
Last night I fired up Xwindows (I don't use it normally as it is slow on my
P90) and found that I have got kWinTV installed. I think I could make this
work as the web cam software but currently I can't get it to display the
image from the capture card.
I think, given what me friend did to get it running the one time he did,
that the (driver? kWinTV?) software is not programming the card inputs
correctly. I know my friend tweaked some code someplace then 'rebuilt'(?) it
several times in order to get it to show something. It's this that I am
trying to get working. I find it difficult to justify going out and getting
USB ports and a new capture device and possibly a new cam when I know that I
have all the hardware that I should need to get it going. If all else fails
I could shove the BTTV card back into a windoze box and hook it onto the
network but this would be admitting defeat and make the Linux system
redundant.
Has anyone used a grand cam video card on Linux?
Has anyone used a BTTV card on Linux?
Has anyone set up a web cam using a BTTV card?
I'd prefer to run it without using Xwindows if possible but first I'd like
to get it running.
Any help using this set-up would be appreciated.
Please note that as yet I don't know even how to build a module properly yet
so PLEASE keep it simple. Also my friend is not currently available to help
else I would turn to him.
Thanks in advance
Bob Dyer

Hello,
you shoulf have mentioned that you have everything,. including cam working, in
your OP....
Should be no problem, try this, works with no problem and is easy to setup:
from w3cam/README:

Note: This [3]CGI is for [4]Linux running a kernel of the [5]2.2.X
series!
w3cam is a simple CGI to retrieve images from a so called video4linux
device. In other words this program will only run on Linux machines
which support a video4linux-device.
w3cam supports a plain mode and a gui mode. In the gui mode a html
with a form is supplied to change some parameters with the mouse ..

This has to be the most fascinating Linux thread of all time ;-) I'll just
throw this link in that I came across last year:

In particular this article:

I found the article impressive and would like to hear comments from those
who have studied it.

That's more like it, thanks for this Michael.
One thing that I may not have made clear is that it DID work but doesn't now
:o(
I think some of the driver setting may be wrong? I know VERY little about
drivers, all I know is that I DID see it working once while my friend was
playing with it using kWinTV and he was muttering about the inputs being
wrong. Late at night he gave up trying to get the video input running and I
thought he left it with the SVHS running but now I come to try it on my own
I can't get any video at all.
I've not yet downloaded w3cam but would this code allow me to set up the
inputs on the card? I'm guessing that I need to manually adjust the driver
to do this and have very little idea how to do this.
Thanks again for this.

Subject: ftp betwixt windoze and linux?
Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 10:59:05 -0000
Hi,
I have RH6.2 on my laptop... I have it networked via a ethernet card to a
hub, likewise my desktop PC. What Iwant to do is transfer files betwixt them
I can ping each machine, but if I try and ftp from linux to windoze, I get
"Connection refused"
If I try and ftp from windoze to linux, ftp explorer, or even the ms-dos ftp
command, starts to dial up the internet i.e. it tries to connect via the
modem, rather than the ethernet card
Any tips, clues, hints on how I can xfer files between the two machines?
Many thanks
Bill

Hello,
yes you can select the input in webmode or preset it with the w3cam config,
just try it out, download & RTFM.
I don't know if you have an original haupauge btv848 or 878 card, the 878
worked for me
out of the box with SuSE 7.0, plain SuSE kernel, the 848 should behave in the
same way.
I have another card with btv878 chip and video input, but it's one of those
cheap crap cards,
no original haupauge card. It works, but you have to fiddle around and compile
tons of stuff
out of the kernel which was really a pain, in order to get the video input
working.
try
lsmod
to see if all modules neccesary got loaded
This is how I could get it running loading the (the order is important!)
modules:
modprobe videodev
modprobe i2c
modprobe tuner type=5
modprobe msp3400
modprobe bttv card=24
lsmod
Good luck
