Something is listening on port 139.Probably inetd, which invokes smbd
when something happens on port 139. If nothing happens, you can't see a
smbd with ps ax.
Look into /etc/inetd.conf if a line with smbd is uncommented.
Or try 'fuser -n tcp 139' or 'socklist' which shows the pid of the
listening process.

http://www.debian.org is a good place to look. You'll need to browse their
package directories and the page for 'which' will have a link for the source.

Thanks, I found it at Freshmeat. I just wasn't sure if it was
part of a package like findutils or not. Plus trying to search for
"which" was about as effective as searching for "the" (which must be
infuriating for fans of the british band "The The" :)

mkisofs states:
boot image can be a LILO based boot floppy. (size: 1.2, 1.44 or 2.88
MB).
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=boot_image should do this, assuming you have a lilo
based boot floppy in /dev/fd0. Maybe you must adjust the root entry of
the kernel (rdev).
I've never made a bootable cd,so it's just a guess.

Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 05:18:07 GMT
Okay, Ive started playing with hdparm lately, and have gotten some
definite improvement out of it with -c, -d, -m, and -u. My current
hdparm line looks something like this:
hdparm -q -c1 -d1 -m16 -u1 /dev/hda
My motherboard is a 440BX Tyan Tiger 100. Iv got the chipset support
compiled into the kernel. Apparently, the board supports UDMA/33. So, Im
wondering, how do the -X options work to kick me up to the next level?
Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why not just get the .tar.gz file in the first place if you can?
Put it in /usr/local (personal pref) then:
gzip -cd package_name.tar.gz | tar xf -
cd pacckage_dir
vi README/INSTALL #Always helps. ;-)
It usually comes down to:
# ./configure -options (if any)
# make
# make install
walla- all done the slackware way. :-)

Subject: help with configuring ssh server to support both ssh1 and ssh2
Date: 11 Feb 2001 07:00:47 GMT
Hi everyone,
I am currently running Secure Shell (SSH) version 2.0.13 server
on RedHat Linux version 6.1 with kernel 2.2.18. At the moment,
I have to support ssh clients running on Microsoft Windows using
SecureCRT 3.2 and F-Secure SSH version 1.0. SecureCRT 3.12
supports ssh version 2.0.13 so I am OK there. However,
F-secure SSH for windows only supports SSH version 1. I've
configured the SSH server on the linux box to support both
version 1 and 2 of ssh (ie. by modifying the configuration file
sshd2_config to support Ssh1Compatibility); I could NOT logon
to the linux box using F-Secure SSH. I have the same
problem with SecureCRT if I choose SSH1 connection. This the
message I got back from the SSH server:
Unsupported protocol version received from remote SSH server
(SSH-2.0-2.0.13). Please not that SSH2 servers can be configured
to accept SSH1 connections.
Can anyone show me how to to make my SSH2 server to accept SSH1
connection? Many thanks.......

funny, i find win2k bloated, it really didn't offer me anything over the few
NT setups i had, all win2k did was cost alot more for a few useless
graphics, did you know win2k has only added just over 6% to the code base of
NT? other then that almost everything was coded into NT, it just has to be
*unlocked* from the reg, same holds true for win95>98>me, it's almost all
their, just not ovious, needs some help to show threw

poor how? programming wise? i think NOT, i mean, who are you to judge
people's programming ability's, just because microsoft has the most used OS
doesn't mean it is the most well coded, microsoft is only the most used
because of a good marketing plane, ever watch an infomerchal and think to
yourself "how can people acholy fall for this crap", but they do, well,
that's how i feel when seeing people pluck the lastest MS bugware off the
shelfs.
>Once these programmer run into financial trouble, the project, one way or

blah, somebody else usolly takes over... and, if somebody doesn't take over
then the project proboly wasn't that popular anyway and won't be missed by
that many people...
>That's is why, invest into Linux is a waste of time for serious businesses.
umm, how do your figure? think about a major install i just did, hell, i
virtually installed all the computers in this god damb town (small town, but
still), with windows, this would have taken forever, here is a break down of
the way it went for the schools and other public places, i would setup a
server with 512mb ram (rh6.2) and 4 500mhz chips. each server would serv out
60 clients each, the server had all your basic stuff, except it had a vnc
server, all the clients had a 32 mb flash rom card, 8mb ram, monitor, ether
card (10base for the smaller setups (<30) of and 100base for the larger ones
(>30)). each cleint had a striped down version of slackzip, basic kernal,
and booted into signal user mode and automaticaly ran a vnc client which
connected to the server (it didn't matter if anybody got root to the
clients, i would just re-flash the chip quick and painlessly). in all, the
libary got it's own server with the full 60 puters (btw, each cleint came to
about $300 total). 3 computer rooms, total 180 computers (spread this
accross 4 servers because of a greater workload because, well, it is
computer class..heh), and i also ended up setting up some for some biz's
after they seen the setup, and for other public buildings. all processing
was done on the servers, which handled it easy because of the shared mem.
the servers did cost a bit, but if you figure it out, it was worth it
considering i saved about $1700 for each client, it is more easy to admin, a
quick install on the servers (which sync of each other) and everybody has
access to the software. this setup truely solved alot of probs and saved
alot of money, i could have never done this project withen budget with
windows....
>MS people is right, Linux is a challenge but will not threatening Windows
OS.
read above, almost all the students love the setup, many now have linux
installed at home, i have converted alot of people..... (i should also
include, i am still i student..but anyway)
>Here are some living proof.
i also have living proof, see above....
>Each new Linux released, the OS getting bigger and clumsier.
rh6.2 is fairly large, but not clumsier, see rh7 for more details on
clumsiness, also note, you should be more carefull and try and refrain from
using the word linux like this, the kernel is not getting that much bigger i
do not find, and not all dists are getting bigger etheir, be spacific to
dists when talking like this please...it really hurts me, really, it
does....
>Each time you upgrade it, you will find more conflict and your PC getting
slower.
now now, don't use *you*, i really don't like that, i, in the way you say
it, i find it getting slower and more conflict? not the case, maybe you do,
meaning you, the person i am repleying to. instead use i, meaning you, see
last sentance to which you i am talking about. (don't ask, i don't even find
that makes sense, proboly doesn't, but who cares?)
>Each time you decide to use it, you'll find the more programs written for
the OS with full of flaw.
i'm starting to get the feeling you might be using development releases, is
this the case? because if it is, don't complain, it's your fault if your
using a development release....if your not, try a diff dists
>Isn't it all deja Vu?
belive i covered that a long time ago, remember, the head thing? man, you
really should get that checked out....now your forgeting things! shesh - go
run quick, FIND HIM A DOCTOR, QUICK!
>Except one thing, Linux is much cheaper but useless if hardly find a great
commercial software >suit to my need.
i could never argue with cheap, could you? well, i can argue with wallmart
cheap, but that isn't the issue here....
btw, who needs commercial software anyway, most any software you can do with
windows, you can find the linux equlivalent of. and if you can't, run wine
to run the win version of it...if linux doesn't suit your needs stop
bitching to everybody else about it not been, you want commercial software,
good, write some, or write the people of your favorit shareware and tell
them you want a *nix port, i personnly find their is a huge amount of good
freesource software to use, more then you, or anybody else could ever use to
their full extent if they started now, no joke, their is that much...if this
doesn't satisfy you, use windows and reboot every 2 hours or so (crash more
like it)
also, just to finish this off, i've already got an email from somebody
asking why i am using outlook....well, it's not, simple, just looks that way
*grin*

Subject: md5sum problem
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 01:48:41 -0600
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am new to Linux, and recently installed RedHat on my system. I
started downloading different RPMs to install on my system, and
noticed
that many sites (such as rpmfind.com) post an MD5 checksum for the
RPMs
you can download. The problem I am having is that many times the
checksum I get for downloaded files (generated using md5sum) are
different than the MD5 checksum posted on the web page.
For example, I went to rpmfind.com, searched for vi, and downloaded
the
first result (vim-static-5.7-10.i386.rpm). According to the web page,
the MD5 for this file is 920a78bfbe6944979b30da54b3c8d771. This is
the
result I get on my system when I run "md5sum
vim-static-5.7-10.i386.rpm"
--> 5dad5ffdeb37d884959680ea76c1e3f1.
As you can see, I get a completely different checksum value. I tried
a
couple of other RPMs from rpmfind.com, and I cannot get any of the MD5
checksums to match what is posted on their web page. The strange
thing
is that I downloaded quite a few RPMs from RedHat, and *most* of the
checksums I generated on my system were the same as the ones posted on
RedHat's web page. However, I did encounter a few RPMs that did not
match the MD5 that RedHat had posted.
Here is the version of md5sum that I'm using (RedHat 6.2):
~> md5sum --version
md5sum (GNU textutils) 2.0e
Written by Ulrich Drepper.
I had a friend try downloading some RPMs (such as the vim RPM) and
running md5sum on his system, and he had the same problem I did (the
checksums don't match). So, I must either be using the wrong version
of
md5sum, not using it correctly, or maybe I shouldn't be using it at
all
(for this checksum comparison).
One final note, even though the md5sum generated checksum doesn't
match
the web page's posted value, if I run the command "rpm --checksig
--nogpg vim-static-5.7-10.i386.rpm", rpm reports that the md5 is OK
for
that package.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Why can't I consistently
get the MD5 checksum to match what is posted on the web page? Your
help
is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
