You have a few options. You could get a free copy of "unstuff"
for Linux from Aladdin <http://www.aladdinsys.com/linux/index.html>
"unstuff" is a

"file expansion tool that can expand many compressed
and encoded formats: StuffIt, StuffIt 5, Zip, Arc, Arj,
gzip, Unix compress, uuencode, BinHex, btoa, MIME,
MacBinary, segmented StuffIt, PrivateFile. And maybe
    even tar."

The above is the option I use, since I needed to unstuff a file
once.

I believe that the Mac networking package NetAtalk contains a lot
of file converters between Mac and *nix formats. Two relevant
links, last I checked, were <http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/>
and <http://www.umich.edu/~rsug/netatalk/>

A long time ago, I used to use mcvert on a Sun 3/50. The code for
that is certainly on the net somewhere.

G'luck....

Although I rpm uninstall is easy but it doesn't show (if it does, but I
dont know yet) what configuration files it makes.

I installed a redhat ppp (rp3) program and now it screws up, I want to
reinstall but it keeps on using the old configuration files.. rpm -e
won't get rid of it.

You can try deleting the standard junk:
find . -name core -type f -exec ls -l {} \;
find . -name \*.log -mtime +5 -exec ls -l {} \;

(change ls to rm to actually delete)

delete files from /tmp
move the /var/cache/helix-update files (these are mostly upgrade rpms)

delete files from /root/tmp - MandrakeUpdate stores stuff here

delete any old mail, print files in /var/spool

clean the /var/log/wtmp files (echo>wtmp)

Run rpm -qa and uninstall the packages you don't use

Subject: Star Office -- I give up
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 13:35:33 -0700

I am using SO 5.2 on Suse Linux 7.1. I will summarize the problems I
have encountered in the past two days trying this software for the first
time. Perhaps some of this stuff
can be resolved. The software is almost unusable with the amount of bugs
I have encountered.

1. In Draw, I changed the zoom factor using the View menu, the rulers
failed to rescale and then broke. Passing the mouse over the rulers
caused them to rescale, but they no longer had cursors to track the
mouse position. Selecting an object also failed to produce the tick
marks on the ruler. Closing and opening the drawing fixed this. It
hasn't happened again.

2. Numerous crashes, SO just says that some unrecoverable error has
happened, and vanishes. Fortunately this hasn't corrupted any files, but
it is too frequent an occurrence for "professional" software. It happens
every 5-10 minutes or so with hard use.

3. After finishing my drawing, I created a File|New|Labels document. I
set the format to Avery 5664 labels. I then copy/pasted my drawing
objects to the labels. Then I tried to print. Blank page. Print to a .ps
file. Also a blank page in the .ps viewer, although there is a lot of
.ps generated. It seems that I cannot get anything, text or drawing
objects to print from the labels. I can print the drawing though.

4. I experimented with printing the drawing. I can print it with the fit
to page option. (I made the page format for the drawing 19"W x 3.5"H so
SO warns me that it can't print it, then gives me options to fit to page
(the page type selected in the printer options) or to posterize. Fitting
to page worked Ok, but posterizing didn't work. Some hunks of my drawing
printed, but others were just gone.

5. More experiments with labels. I made user-defined labels, and put
some text on them. Amazingly, when I printed these user defined labels,
something came out! But when I copied my drawing objects onto them, same
old story, a blank page.

6. SO crashes with unrecoverable errors every few minutes. This is
ridiculous.

Well, I don't have time to continue as a Sun Microsystems beta tester
for SO, so I guess I will have to give up and find other software.
Perhaps the version number should be adjusted to 0.5.2? It is a shame
because I had heard SO billed so many times as the office suite that can
make Linux able to do everything M$ Windoze can do, but it unfortunately
is of worse quality than M$ software. I have used Applixware for a
few years, but it is weak on features. It is also very stable though. In
fact I can hardly recall if it ever crashed. I was excited to see that
Star Office Draw had good features for very precise drawing. But it is
too buggy and unstable to get the nice drawing on my screen onto a piece
of paper. Very disappointing.

Good luck Sun developers, I hope you folks can get SO to be a stable
program some day. But you have a lot of work cut out for you it seems. I
would even be willing to pay good money for SO if it worked well.

The rest sounds a bit like bad RAM, try compiling a kernel,
it shouldn't stop with the message: gcc caught fatal signal 11.

Subject: Add SCSI module to installation image?
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 17:39:43 -0500

Hi,

For a product I'm working on, we take a Red Hat 7.0 installation CD
"image" (i.e. copy everything off the CD to a filesystem), modify it
(add additional RPMs, mostly), and then use that new "image" to burn new
customized install CD's for our product (or install via NFS, during
testing, using kickstart diskettes).

Okay, that's worked fine for us all along.

Now comes a new SCSI adapter (to replace an old one, made by the same
company, but a newer model) that won't work with the "gold" Red Hat 7.0
installation CD (you get an error message during install about not
finding any disks to install on). We have obtained a driver for Red Hat
7.0 (already compiled in .o format) that will let Red Hat 7.0 work with
the old SCSI adapter or the new one.

The instructions that come with it talk about going out to a command
line and running insmod on the module during a manual install. That
works fine.

The PROBLEM is that our install is completely automatic and unattended.
We need to replace the .o file in the install "image" so that the image
will work either way without intervention. I tried replacing the .o
file in modules.cgz (in instimage/modules) but that didn't help (and
broke the install for systems using the older SCSI adapter).

Surfed google & RH's web site for a while and could not find an answer.

Oh, yeah, final caveat - we install the SMP kernel on the systems (but I
have no idea what's on our kickstart diskettes - I think it's UP). I
have two different .o files (one for SMP and one for UP).

Anyone have any clues how I might do this?

(And moving to Red Hat 7.1 would be a massive amount of work and
regression testing for us that we're trying to avoid at all costs, even
though 7.1 works on both the old and the new SCSI adapter out of the
box).

Thanks so much in advance,
Peter

I a little surprised. I've been using Star Office ever since Star
Division first released it for free with inanley complex registration
process. I predominantley used it for doing all my University work, i.e.
reports and variations therof.

SO never crashed oin me as often as Word has in a week. Granted, that's
more polemics than fact. Nonetheless, I can not second your report of
it's instability.

I use it consistantly on Win2K and GNU/Linux and do not experience by far
as much trouble as you did.

When I get a chance, I will try to reproduce your crashes. Would you
maybe send me that label or diagram so that I may walk more closely along
your actions?

I am not affiliated with Sun or Star - just somebody who switched to SO
becasue it was "so reliable".

I forget the details of how I did it, maybe it was SuSE's package manager
that did it for me? - but it can be done.

I've run Qt/KDE programs under GNOME.

But, as stated, I let my SuSE take care of it, so can't tell you about the
dependencies.
