When I mentioned I could not boot from Wind98 recover diskette,
I meant the PC read the floppy for a few seconds, then turn to
read the C drive (/dev/hda) over and over. I could see the disk
access indicator lit on and off. The only way to get out was to
do ctrl-alt-del :-) It happened the same way with Win98 CD.

I reshuffled boot device sequence a few times (floppy/HD/CDROM)
but to no avail.

Please find herewith the fdisk diskplay of both drives. I would
really appreciate some advice how to fix the problem.

You need some kind of rescue system CD/disk to boot, it has to contain
a module for your NIC and sshd. On the other hand, 50 workstations with
Linux? I would seriously take a look at www.ltsp.org, makes
administration
& backup a lot easier...

Good luck

The Linuxcare business card is great for this. :)

Yes.

You have to use a parititioning program (e.g. Partition Magic
or Gnu parted) that knows how to deal with that issue by
"growing" and "shrinking" the filesystems along with the
partitions.

>( well it'll have a FAT file system as the drive was formatted

Linux will be perfectly happy as long as the filesystem is
"grown" along with the partition.

Well of course. For "ghost" too! You can't do a copy without an
operating system.

The only difference between ghost and tar or dd over ssh or rsh is
that ghost uses a broadcast protocol, so it's log(#machines) faster.

I've heard of something like this before, but can't remember what the
solution was.

What happens if you just login as a user and su to root, do you still get
the delay or not?

Hallo an alle!

Ich habe hier ein etwas groesseres Problem. Ich habe vor kurzem einen alten
Laptop (i386, 400 MB Harddisk, 66 Mhz) geschenkt bekommen. Als
Betriebssystem ist Windows 3.1 installiert. Es ist nur ein 3,5 Zoll
Disketten-Laufwerk vorhanden, kein CD-Rom Laufwerk.
Jetzt meine Frage.
;))

Also, fuer eine etwas ausfuehrlichere Antwort waere ich sehr dankbar.

CU, Dennis.

One idea: You could put a line in one of your startup scripts
(e.g. /etc/rc.d/rc.local) that uses the "openvt" command from
the consol-tools package to start a program on a particular
console. Or you could setup an init script and associated
symlinks (in accordance with whatever init system you use) that
does much the same thing.

I am running Red Hat 7 with the 2.2 kernel. My machine locks up in or
out of X, although I more frequently use X. I try ^-Alt-bksp, and
^-Alt-Fx keys, but nothing helps. Today, all I had running in X was
XMMS. The computer continued to play the song although the display
was frozen (except the mouse), but did not continue on to the next
song. My eth0 was not active before the lockup, or I would have tried
to telnet in. Any ideas?

The Linux/Unix guru here at my office has never seen anything like it.
He is using the same basic machine (HP Omnibook 6000 P3 700, but mine
is a 600), as are several other Linux users and has had no problems
with it. I am thinking that it could be the Alsa drivers I loaded for
my sound, but now that I think about it, I think it froze once before
I got them loaded.

Thanks in advance,

Agreed. But why even bother with using a hd in some workstations?

I haven't used ghost, however from the ltsp homepage:

Linux makes a great platform for deploying diskless workstations that
boot from a network server. The LTSP is all about running thin client
computers in a GNU/Linux environment."
