Subject: mounting SunOS optical
Date: Sun, 14 Feb 1999 20:58:57 -0500
Hi,
I am trying to mount a sunOS optical on my Linux machine. The ufs
filesystem is built into my kernel, the optical is at /dev/sda, and the
directory I am going to is /pd.
When I enter the command : "mount -t ufs -o ro /dev/sda /pd"
I get the error:
sda: DEV 08:00 Sun disklabel: bad magic 0000
unknown partition table
ufs_read_super: bad magic number 0x00000400 on dev 0/0
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/sda,
or too many mounted file systems.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thank you
Rich

This may be asking a dumb question, but have you got your
kernel compiled for max 16Meg usage only? Probably not,
but do a top or free and confirm...

Could you tell me what version of KDE you are using?? I was able to compile
kicq fine with KDE 1.0 and qt-1.42-3. But with KDE 1.1pre-2 I got the same
error as you did. I haven't tried it with KDE 1.1 yet, but I'll do that and
find out what happens. I know kxicq works with all the above versions of KDE
and Licq is also another good ICQ clone(but doesn't have the built in KDE
specific features, although there is an older KDE version)

Looking at options for building a VPN. With MS I can use NT, Proxy
Server and PPTP. What options do I have if I go the Linux route.

You could put this in the /usr/local/lib/mc/mc.ext file.
regex/\.(jpg|gif|png|bmp)$
Open=zgv '%f'
When you press enter on a highlighted .jpg etc. file in mc, it
should call zgv.
I think if you want to create thumbnails you should press the v then
the u key in zgv while in the directory that has the images.

Free memory is a waste. Linux will use whatever memory it finds for the disk
buffer cache. If that memory was instead just sitting around doing nothing, it
would be as brain dead as windoze!
If you start a memory hogging program (say, netscape) Linux will take some ram
away from the buffer cache and use it for netscape. quit netscape, and you
should see a bunch of free memory, which will eventually get re-used for the
disk buffer cache if it doesn't get used somewhere else...

hi!
i cannot get my pppd-connetion working!
my modem is in 1 of 5 phones in my house. They are connected with a
phone-machine. So normally i have to type a "0" before the normal
telenumber. But after typing 0 the phone-machine takes some seconds to
connect me out of my house to the normal net. So the modem thinks there
is no dialtone and exits! I just want to ignore the dialtone-check! I
already did that in win95. i just disabled the dialtone-check and
everything works super!
so can anybody tell me, how to disable this check?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi all,
I'm interested in trying to setup a Linux and Netscape based information
Kiosk for use in a sport retail store.
What I have in mind is a low cost system that would be used by customers
to enter personal data into a form as well as a display for other information.
Something along the lines of a frame based .html local web site with a
cgi script to collect the customer data.
My concerns center around setting up X and Netscape to allow access
only to the local site and not the rest of the HD.
I would think it would be best to lock X and Netscape so somebody can't
exit X or Netscape or use Netscape to access anything other than the
local site.
Does anybody know of links or other people that have done this?
Thanks for any help,

How do I go about changing the permissions of the target? /dosc/windows

If it is an init string problem USR's webpage will give you init strings
for their various products. I would guess that it's an init problem as
what you describe is exactly what happened to me until I got the string

The security issue is that there is an account with root privilidges for
which the password is common knowledge or non-existant.
If you are concerned with the three finger salute and NT, then it would
be easy enough as root to encapsulate the shutdown -r now in a script
which seeks user approval for the shutdown in the "Are you sure you want
to reboot?" manner.
This means that a non-root user can only reboot at the console, and root
can still reboot remotely.
Then again, if your machine is stand alone, then it is always easier to
use the short cuts which breech security.

I recently installed RedHat 5.2 on a new hard drive, and have
noticed a weird problem that wasn't present with my last installation (I
didn't do anything differently). I run through KDE as a regular user
95% of the time... occasionally using "su" through a terminal windows to
log in as root for some system administration stuff.
Now, when I use "su" from a terminal window and try running some
programs as root... I get error messages like these:
[steve@localhost steve]$ su
Password:
[root@localhost steve]# linuxconf
remadmin (GUI frontend) exiting abnormaly
[root@localhost steve]# xfm
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server

Any ideas on what I might have accidentally done differently during
this latest install... or some other reason as to why I can't seem to
run anything through "su" anymore?

don't launch xterms with -login. .bash_profile is only supposed to be
read when you log in. put all per shell stuff into .bashrc. i call
.bashrc as the last thing in .bash_profile so even my first shell gets
that information.
especially, put the prompt PS1 in .bashrc.

again, don't start them as login shells.
perhaps you could detect a running fetchmail and not call it again in
that case? fetchmail creates a file called ~/.fetchmail.pid as a lock
file to prevent multiple running fetchmails &c. you can detect this
too and act accordingly. put this in your .bash_profile:
[ -e ~/.fetchmail.pid ] || fetchmail -d 600
now if there is no lockfile, fetchmail will get kicked off. if there
is one, fetchmail won't get run.
hope this helps.

Considered looking at SUSE? They have a few other XF86 servers and apparently
have worked pretty closely with the organization. Their package (at least the
full bundle) ships with SAX, which is similar to XF86Setup. For some of the
newer hardware, it may not always work, but it does a pretty good job.
This worked pretty well for my desktop applications, but I've yet to try going
to a laptop; which I opted for AcceleratedX. That works pretty well too....
after I installed all of the patches to make it current and also figured out
what you need to do to make it play with RedHat. (Xi's tech support provided
this info, but it was not on the web site at the time I installed)

A .Rar archive can be used by both *nix and Windoze, but, what if I
create an .exe rar archive _under Win_ or vice versa??
Will a Linux user, say, be able to use said executable archive??

I'd suggest keeping as much as possible mounted read-only. For instance,
most installations are designed to have /usr read-only (and networked),
ISTR all you really need to write to is /dev and /etc (and /etc you
could probably get around).
Another alternative would be to have a root disk image stored on the
disk but mounted as a ramdisk, so nothing gets accidentally changed
or broken.

I've had this problem at times, and it always seems related to Netscape
running. Every now and then Netscape just ballons and sucks up all available
memory, forcing the system to go into massive swapping. Shutting down
Netscape releases the memory and things go back to normal. One thing
that consistently triggers this is trying to scroll quickly through a
long page by grabbing the scroll bar and moving it. I suspect there's
some stupidity in Netscape causing this, since it never happens with any
application but Netscape
System: Linux 2.0.36, XFree86 3.3.3, Netscape 4.08, but this problem has
been showing up ever since Netscape 4.0 came out.

I just installed the old package, and then downloaded the new XFree, took the
XF86_SVGA file out of it, renamed the old XF86_SVGA file in my installed package
as a backup, and put the new XF86_SVGA in. It worked.

Try 4.5 and trade the memory grab for an occasional CPU grab.
