I use Slackware's pppsetup script to configure the connection, then cd
/etc/ppp and emacs options, uncomment the 'debug' line, then run ppp-go. If
you try this and there are still problems, post the output of ppp-go ...

Missy, if this is still hanging you up, it has caused me much grief when
it happened!
Do this (it works for me)...

boot up single user.
edit (with pico or vi) /etc/inittab

Set your default runlevel to 3.
You will be able to boot, and once booted, just type "startx" (without
quotes).

Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2001 16:08:43 -0700

I am running Red Hat v7.0 on my machine with GNOME. As a root after removing
the cdrom from the drive, I gave 'umount /mnt/cdrom' command, for which it
is giving the error '/mnt/cdrom device is busy'. Because of that I gave the
*fuser -km /mnt* command. After that the screen stopped responding, even if
I give CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE or CTRL+ALT+DEL, it is not responding. Can any one
suggest me what should I do.

When I ask a question about how to get something to work, I often get the kind
of advice that can be regarded as an algorithm. Why not just put it in the code
_once_ and make _thousands_ of lives easier?

Take a look in /var/run and look for a "gdm.pid" file. If it is there
and you are in a text console then you need to delete that file and then
restart "xfs"

 rm -f /var/run/gdm.pid
 /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart

Then you can try "startx" if that works then logout and go back to a
text console and enter "gdm" this should take you to the login screen.

Perhaps, the distro/system you asked for, are aimed to people who know
what they are doing. As there is no need for any nifty config tool, to
handle
Linux, bash, vi and some (tons) of those great GNU tools will be enough.

If you want to use a system that does everything for you, get the distro
which
can do this, that's what Linux is about:

You'll need to set up Samba, make the file accessible in a Samba share
to the users in question, the share itself actually residing on the
directory that Apache serves the file from. Mind you, Samba is
probably the better basis for the whole thing. Make the file writable
by those who have update access, and read-only to the rest of the
world.

No. Newsgroups are a public medium for pubic exchange, not a private

You SHOULD NOT remove the CD-ROM until *after* you do the 'umount
/mnt/cdrom'. Re-insert the CD-ROM in the drive, and the system will
come back to life. Really! It appears you have a 'brain dead' CD-ROM
drive -- cannot 'lock' the media in the drive: Linux does give the
command to the drive to 'lock'.

The *same* rules apply to floppy disks, zip drives, and other removable media.

Note that for *most* removable media devices, you *cannot* eject the
media until after you (successfully) execute the umount command. PC
floppies are not lockable, though. And I guess your CD-ROM drive is
also not lockable as well.

You cannot umount a disk which has open files, including directories.
Close all file manager windows relating to the file system in question
(/mnt/cdrom/...). Kill or exit from any programs running from the CD.
Close any programs accessing files on the CD (i.e 'gv /mnt/cdrom/foo.pdf').

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Unless you have some seriously old kit, there is no
way in hell that you should be able to remove a CD-ROM from a CD-ROM
drive that is mounted. Modern hardware has a "lock drive door" command,
and the kernel issues this command when a medium is mounted, only
issuing the "unlock drive door" command when it's umounted successfully.

>for which it is giving the error '/mnt/cdrom device is busy'. Because
>of that I gave the *fuser -km /mnt* command. After that the screen

"Doctor, it hurts when I try to cram myself into a 24"x24"x24" box!"
"Well, Don't Do That, Then."

If your drive does not honor the "lock drive door" command and will let
you eject a CD-ROM when said CD-ROM is mounted, you will have to be
careful. Don't eject a CD-ROM until after you've umounted it. The
kernel is getting confused because it thinks there is a CD-ROM in the
drive when there is none, and this is most likely behind the freeze you
saw.

For the long term, go buy a newer CD-ROM. Some units can flake out in
unpredictable ways, and you can pick up a 24x IDE unit for roughly $30
from http://www.pricewatch.com .

convert doesn't do MPEG AFAICT. For MPEG, you want either the old
standby, mpeg_encode (search freshmeat, have forgotten the exact URL) or
something like Broadcast2000 at http://heroinewarrior.com/ .

mpeg_encode, while it's not there in the UI department, Just Works. I'm
not sure about the other package because a) the author can't be bothered
to make RPMs in anything other than version 4, for RedHat 7.x only b)
the source code throws up hundreds of compiler errors c) compiling a
small utility package from the same author required me to parse the
compiler errors and hand-hack the Makefile to make it work right.
