As those who've been following this thread know, I'm
trying to get a PnP modem to work. I'm using Definite 7.0
(which is based on Red Hat); kernel version 2.2.12-10.
(The modem is a Motorola VoiceSURFR 56k.)

I'm definitely grokking things better now, with help from
various resources including this list.

By my current understanding, I have three choices.

CHOICE #1: Let my PnP BIOS do the work.

Apparently to do this I need to know what readport address
to use. The man page for isapnp.conf tells me:

>Due to the difficulty of determining the correct READPORT
>address to use (which must be the same as the one the BIOS
>used), this method may be tricky to get working.

, but doesn't go into any more detail. I poked around my
BIOS (Award -- don't have the version handy) a bit, but
didn't see anything there about readports. Nothing good
in the boot messages either.

CHOICE #2: Uncomment isapnp.conf (the output of pnpdump)
by hand.

I know that I need to uncomment an IO line (to set the IO
address), and an INT line (to set the IRQ), and ACT Y, to
enable the modem. But I don't know which ones to choose.
(However, see below.)

CHOICE #3: Use the --config option, so that pnpdump does
the uncommenting for me.

This didn't work, apparently because isapnp.gone is
currently a dummy file that does not reflect the true state
of my system.

After writing the above, I looked in /proc/interrupts and
/proc/ioports, and uncommented isapnp.conf based on what I
found out.

When I ran isapnp, I got an error message that told me:

IO range check attempted while device activated.

My IO range is free according to /proc/ioports, so
apparently that's not the problem.

What am I doing wrong? (And could I avoid the whole
problem if I figured out the readport address and let my
BIOS do the work?)
