To clarify that a bit, I know that just because there's
a file for thus-and-such a ttySN, it doesn't necessarily
mean that something is physically hooked up. But is
knowing whether there is or not just a matter of knowing
my hardware? (All I have right now is the mouse, the
keyboard, and the monitor. As I said before, I'm pretty
sure my mouse is not serial, although I really don't know
what the other choices are. I assume that keyboards and
monitors have nothing to do with serial ports.)

Is the fact that IO addresses are already assigned to
some of the serial ports interfering with my setup of the
modem? Should I clear them out and start with a clean
slate?
