I do have the host file configured to show my other computer. I know that when I ping
either the loopback, or the ip on the local machines they work fine. but when I go to
ping the other machine, they fail. Both have new NIC's in them going to a hub.

All you need to do is setup the hosts file on your system. If you do
not have a DNS setup, a hosts file will resolve any names that you care
to give your machines. The hosts file can be found in /etc (on
Slack3.5, I am not sure on RH5.2). You also need to make sure that you
configure the proper files for networking. I am not sure what they are
right now, I believe they can be found in one of the Linux-Howto's (Its
been a few years since I manually setup the networking files) I
typically use the script "netconfig" to configure the basics of my
network. (This script may only be included with the Slackware
distribution, but RH should have a network setup script that will do the
same thing.) I hope this helps....
