Windows passes the username used to logon to windows when logging on to
the linux box and it is this name that is used for unix logon
verification, with the corresponding password from /etc/passwd.
N.B. Win 98 uses password encryption by default: either disable this in
the win98 registry (see the Samba documentation) or enable encrypted
passwords in samba.
