  A very simple way to tell if a link is symbolic or not is ls -la
link... if it is a
symbolic link you will see lrwxr-xr-x (cut middle) link -> file. Where a
symbolic link
points to a file, a hard link points to the same inode as the original
file. Therefore,
if you ls -la hardlink you will see the same entry as a normal file i.e.
-rwxr-xr-x (cut middle) hardlink .

   This doesn't make any sense. The fact that the mouse only works when
root is logged
in doesn't seem logical. Have you tried to su to root, kill gpm, exit,
then startx?
Have you tried booting up without gpm support then running startx?
Perhaps these tests
might help you find the actual problem.
