Redhat makes soft-links form /dev/cdrom to the device.
You can see soft link with "ls -l"
they are shown like this for example:
 -----------------------------------
#ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            4 Oct 16  1998 /dev/cdrom -> scd0
 -----------------------------------
the first char "l" means "link" (soft link in fact)
after the permissions, "1" means that there is only one inode pointing
to that file (so there are no other hard link to it, just one entry
possible to read the file. note that "file" here represents the soft
link, not the device it is pointing to).
at the end of the line "-> scd0" shows where this link is pointing.

if you want to change it, it is really easy:
 ------------------------------
#rm /dev/cdrom
#ln -s /dev/YOUDEVICEHERE /dev/cdrom
 ------------------------------
don't worry for the "rm" command, it will delete the soft link only.

by the way you will want to make another link for the cdrom burner
#ln -s /dev/YOURDEVICEHERE /dev/burner

then check in /etc/fstab if everything is alrigth. It should except that
you may want to add a line for your cdrom burner in case you use it to
read some CDs sometimes.

For your mouse problem, if you use X windows, i would say that you just
should not launch gpm in /etc/rc scripts. change this manualy or with
your favoryte tool (linuxconf ... whatever)

hope this helps

Subject: A couple of questions...

I sent this email on Friday to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but still
doesn't show up, so...here it goes again...sorry if it's duplicated

 ---------------------

 Kwira all :)

I have a couple of questions (as usual...one of this days I'll have
answers :)...first one:

When you install RH6 it makes a link (I don't know if it's a soft or
 hard
link...how do I find out?) on /dev/cdrom to whatever it thinks is your
cdrom. The thing is...I have 2 CDs...a CD-writer and a CD--ROM, and the
link got fixed to my CD-Writer....and I want it to point to my
cd-rom...how
do I change the link?

 Second question:

Whenever I start Linux (I'm dualbooting till my modem gets here :) and
 I
start X, the mouse doesn't move....if I log in as root and do gpm -t ms
 -R
and then kill gpm (it doesn't work if I don't kill it), then log in to
another console (without logging root off) as normal user and startx the
mouse works...but if I log off the root one, the mouse dies again, no
matter if I am already in X or not....what the (*&^(^ is
happening? And...how do I fix it? I don't like to have root loged
in....I
really don't want to get distracted and mess something up :)

 Thanks in advance :)

 Vox

PS:To Richard Adams: I've noticed the same mail delay you mention with
vger....that's why I'm trying through this other server now :)

PPS: 4hr later I'm still waiting for the original msg to show up....my
apologies to everybody if this comes through twice.

PPPS: 3 days later the msg doesn't show through that server, so...back
on
trying through vger :/
