Try using Protocol "imps/2" rather than "intellimouse" as the mouse
type. You'll probably need to edit the XF86Config file by hand.
Recommended reading for wheeled mice is Nahaboo Colas' page at
http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/
which explains the above suggestion (it worked for me) and also has tips
on how to set up use of the wheel in various X applications. One thing
not explicitly stated there is that, by default, *clicking* the wheel
generates Button-2 events, while the RH button generates Button-3
events. This had me hesitating for a while until I just configured it
and tried it.
[For completeness, *rolling* the wheel generates Button-4 and Button-5
events, depending on direction of movement; the LH Button generates
Button-1 events, of course.]
