Of related interest is how to kill off a zombie process. This is one of the few
times I *need* to reboot, just to get rid of them. I've had a couple of
instances of gzip going off into never-never land and taking a *lot* of
CPU cycles with it.

This is usually not a great problem, because I routinely shutdown when I'm done
with the computer. But if I kept my system up and running endlessly, I would
eventually run out of processes in a few months. There certainly must be a
quick and easy way to kill zombies, but I just don't know what it is.
