Yeah, but typing zless filename.tar.gz is easier to remember. And if you
have less set up properly you could simply use...
less filename.tar.gz
And if you are really clever you can...
less filename.tar.Z
and...
less filename.tar.bz2
and...
less filename.tgz
and...
less filename.gz
and...
less filename.Z
and...
less filename.bz2
I don't know about anyone else but I think "less" is a lot easier to
remember than a whole heap of command switches.
