Cool. What role does a window manager serve? As far as I can make out, X
enables an app to get "a rectangular area" and paint on it, and manages
rectangular areas overlapping one another.

Lets say I try to install a different window manager this evening and trash
the installation. Can I run netsape directly from X with

        X -usecluent /usr/something/netscape-navigator

or similar? Or does a window manager provide facilities without which
netscape cannot run?
