I discussed my understanding of "smarthost" and "open relay" in a long
message I sent yesterday, so I won't repeat that here. I do, however, want
to avoid a very important misunderstanding.

Jim's posting included this quote:

At 04:20 PM 1/19/00 +0100, James (Jim) Hatridge wrote [in part]:
>>If an ISP can't police open relays feeding into their smarthost
>>well enough to nail things within 3-5 days, then it really is time
>>to go looking for a new ISP.

I want to be very clear that Jim is NOT quoting me here. I would not give
this advice; frankly, I think it is insensitive nonsense offered by someone
out of touch with the realities faced by households and small businesses
trying to get affordable Internet access. That suggestion came from "AB" at
"ORBS catchall account <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>". Please direct any
reactions to that advice to "AB", not to me.

As to Jim's other question ...

... sorry, but I haven't seen this. vger uses a weird mix of forwarders,
though (my linux-newbie mail goes through a site in Finland, for example),
so this may be from a site used for only part of the list.
