Well it does not take much to force you to reinstall linux i see, i
certanlly would NOT need to reinstall my box just because i lost my swap,
come to that i have never even had a "real reason" to reinstall because of
operator error.

auth(entication) is every thing on a multi user system, it seems that when
closing down that file supposed to be a symlink, but gdm cannot find it, i
certanly would not worry one iota about it.
Could it be that gdm is running in the background and not being used and
therefor has no (?lock?-file) and hence the error message.??
