I am planning to install a linux-distro in a computer in my workplace.
This machine has a 3.2 Gb HD, with old Dos 6.2 and Win 3.1, so in order to
use all its space I had to partition it (through Dos fdisk) and create
another, because of the limitations of the original Fat.
My question is: will I be able to format the second partition (in dos, d:)
into a ext2/linux partition using Disk Druid without losing anything in the
first partition (c: in dos)?
The second is there only for a "backup" of important data, although we can
work without it. I am planning to install Slackware, since we don't have a
cd-rom to use (although I am planning to ask for ab old one for the
install). It is a Intel PII 333Mhz machine with 32Mb. Will I be able to
use a GUI and a X11 word processor with reasonable speed?
The second partition has 1.2 Gb - I believe enough for a installation
without network, no modem, no sound.
I work in a public office, so it will be used for word processing and
printing through a Epson or HP Laserjet printer - no need for fancy
multimedia or internet access.
BTW, here in Brazil a law is being discussed that would require public
offices to use only open source and free software, with the only exception
being cases when no free version of a software can be found.
If approved it would mean that no money would be given to M$ anymore -
surely a good thing, don't you think?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.
