Sometimes, when a modem connection with an Internet service provider goes bad,
the modem remains hung and the COM port (COM4 or /dev/cua3) remains busy, and I
have to shut down the operating system and turn off the computer or reboot in
order to use the modem again. Killing the application does not revive the COM
port, and typing +++ does nothing. This happens also in MS-DOS and OS/2 Warp,
not just Linux. Is there any way to release the modem port without rebooting?
