I have *finally* got my Iomega Ditto Max Pro internal with Iomega's
accelerator card to work under Linux kernel 2.0.36 with ftape 4.02 and
associated utils. When I say finally, it has taken 3 days of intensive
experiments and intense frustration, compounded by some *jerk* running a
jack-hammer over the road outside my office for most of that time!

First: I downloaded ftape-utils and ftape 4.02 rpm prebuilt for i386, from
ftape's home site (I don't have the disk space free on this machine to keep
the full linux source tree loaded, so I avoided trying to recompile). I
downloaded ftape's source in order to get some of the scripts etc.

Second: I modified isapnp.conf to reflect settings that I know the Ditto
Dash card worked with under windoze - IRQ 9, DMA 3, IO 0x0210

Third: I modified the install script supplied with ftape to deselect floppy
and parallel port drivers, and to select ftape.o, zftape.o and
ftape-internal.o with the appropriate options switches set. Note that you
have set the option ft_fdc_mach2=1 otherwise nothing works (contrary to my
understanding of the copious readme's and howto's with ftape).

Fourth: I re-modified the install script to add '-f' (force loading even if
the kernel version doesn't match) to each insmod entry as insmod complained
that the modules were built for kernel 2.0.35 and my kernel is 2.0.36

Fifth: Bingo! It now works, as far as I can tell. I am still testing it on
various tar backups to see if anything falls over. So far, I have
successfully tar'd 4GB onto one tape, and restored it all without errors.
Looking good.

What I have not done yet is setup automatic loading of the modules at boot
time. I don't think that the ISAPNP command *needs* to be run unless the
card has been removed from the PC, but I plan to run it at every boot just
to be sure. Does anyone have any comments or guidance on this point?

In summary then, the following are my settings:

file: isapnp.conf -- with comments removed for brevity
(DEBUG)
(READPORT 0x0210)
(ISOLATE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(CONFIGURE IOM0040/-1 (LD 0
(IO 0 (BASE 0x0210))
(INT 0 (IRQ 9 (MODE +E)))
(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 3))
(ACT Y)
))
(WAITFORKEY)

file: insert
#!/bin/bash
misc='/lib/modules/preferred/misc'
isapnp ./isapnp.conf
insmod $misc/ftape.o -f ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,none,none,none
ft_tracings=3,3,3,3,3
insmod $misc/zftape.o -f ft_major_device_number=27
insmod $misc/zft-compressor.o -f
insmod $misc/ftape-internal.o -f ft_fdc_fc10=0 ft_fdc_mach2=1
ft_fdc_base=0x210 ft_fdc_dma=3 ft_fdc_irq=9 ft_fdc_threshold=15
ft_fdc_rate_limit=4000

Subject: Ditto Max

I have finally managed to compile a newer version of ftape and it
appears to be working. The drive responds to commands.
It seems that ftape is unable to read the header information on any of
my tapes. They have all been previously used with the
iomega backup software under NT.

The Ditto Max will not format tapes.

Has anybody used a Ditto Max Internal successfully with ftape?
