After unsuccessfully trying to get an AIWA Bolt drive to work, I
have an Iomega Ditto
Max installed with SuSE 6.3. Kernel is 2.2.13, and according to the
manual, it is supposed to include a version of ftape.
An attempt to access the drive with:
        mt -f /dev/nqft0 status
produces the result "no such device"".

The directory /usr/src/linux/include/config contains a file
ftape.h which appears
likely to have been included in setup by yaST. Its version is not
identified, and from the
email messages I see posted to linux-tape, possibly the most recent
"unstable" 4.x version
may be required.
Instructions in the recent message from Fredrich Lobenstock appear
to be a reasonable next step, but I would like to confirm this before
downloading 4.x and trying
to rebuild the kernel, and I would also like to get any other relevant
suggestions.
