You must be a CompSci guy. An EE would have disassembled the device long 
before now :)

You need the firmware. If you have that, there are plenty of download options. 
Look at the usb-serial directory. There are userspace options as well. I am 
not sure if fxload (from the hotplug CVS) supports the older 2131, but it 
wouldn't be hard to adapt.
