Ahem. Somebody else told me to drop the always-true comparision from the
if-clause that I copied from usb-skeleton.c, and I considered that 
sensible. It would anyway require some more changes to the driver
to allow multiple opens.

Because I a) haven't read the entire kernel USB source before I started
writing this driver (which wouldn't have helped anyway, as I use 2.6.7,
which obviously doesn't contain this file), and b) because I _have_ read 
that the recommended way to get started on a USB driver is 
usb-skeleton.c.
