got it, thanks! It works now!! My main problem was unbelievably stupid (ain't it always???) the real device name was burried in different directory: /dev/usb/ttyUSB0. That might be 2.2.20 specific? None of the docs mention that, and the kernal created the devices automagicly somewhere when I wasn't looking. At any rate, chars go out and back just fine. So now I can build my embedded system to work with the FTDI chip, and have a working point to fall back on. thanks for the help!
