OK, I didn't know that.

It's _almost_ working.  I spoke too soon.  I got the linux
side to see the driver, and the driver can see the ftdi chip,
but I can't get loop back.  I used minicom, and it turns out
it didn't change the serial line it was talking to, so I was
actually looping back on my external modem (on a real serial line).

so I'll be back at your script this evening when I get home.
More questions coming I'm sure!

It's definitly weird, I have a serial program that can open the
device, but when I try to send data, nothing happens on the chip
rfx line.  So I'm closer than I was, but not quite there yet.
