One of the things about promoting a well-reasoned viewpoint is that
the flamers are generally louder than the sensible partitipants in
the discussion. (And many people who disagree with the flamers do
not speak up, because they have other things to do besides get
flaimed.) Again, this is sad because it allows the flamers to
discoourage dissent.
I received quite a few supportive and intelligent comments
in private e-mail during the discussion to which you refer. While
the public discussion contained many "flames," there was much
valuable discussion in private. And at least some of the readers
simply filtered out the flames.

It relates to the discussion. Philips might be more inclined to reveal
technical information to a project which used the BSD or X license,
because (a) the code would be more widely usable and (b) the license
would not carry with it a manifesto promoting an anti-business agenda.
I would recommend approaching Philips with a proposal for a BSD-licensed
driver.
