'urro.

If the problem is the lower frequency droning, you might be able to remove
some of it by isolating the machines from the floor.. As some of the noise
will be transmitted through floors, walls etc..

A layer or two of carpet, an old mattress? You get the idea. :-). You can
get 'isometric' pads to do the job, but they cost lots.. I think it's a
brand name..

If it's airborne noise, go for the heavy drapes and egg cartons on the walls
option.

You're not really going to get around the PC noise problems at the source
without spending lots of money on exotic cooling solutions for modern cpu's.

Moving the cluster to the gge might be an option.. My test LAN got kicked
out of the house into the gge about two years ago, when the noise got too
much after adding #6. :-).

Cheers, Chris Hellyar.

Subject: The Mythical Quiet PC

Things have reached breaking point with regards to noise.

I have a small render farm, which by virtue of tight deadlines runs
permanently, more or less.

As PCs get more powerful, so they have become noisier. Recently, the
hums generated seem to be *almost* reinforcing each other creating an
unsubtle low-frequency droning that can be hard from the bedroom. A
stethescope reveals that no one PC is responsible.

So, I wonder, what are the options for quiet PCs these days?

I have the sneaking suspicion that the answer is "not much" and all the
gear is going to have to go in an armour-plated shed. Even then I'll
want quiet workstations. It could get very, very pricey and that's bad
news right now.
