I actually changed it to Option  "Emulate3Buttons" "off" after my post and
it made no difference.

As to how the mouse is plugged in - I don't really know :)
It is plugged in to a little socket adjacent to the usb sockets.
I assume it is a PS/2 mouse. It has a different connector (little round 6
pin) to the one on the older computer which is a serial mouse.

Thanks for your help anyway. I think I will try reinstalling Redhat and see
what happens.
