Does the mouse have a small round connector on it? If yes, then it's PS/2, if no, and it's not USB then it's serial. This means you must change the /dev/mouse link to point to the appropriate serial port.
You can only do that change as root, but you really should create a username for yourself and use that for everything else, otherwise you could break something. Reinstalling RedHat is not necessary, but you can do it if you want to waste some time.
