Gnome.. For what I do it reaches the right balance between eye candy and functionality... I also load the kde libraries on any machine I use though, so I can use the k* apps as well (qt stuff) as some of them are nice in their own right.
I do a lot of work/playing at home and work with diskless X terms, and remote X servers.. Gnome works far better in this environment, there are some things under KDE that break when the window manager is not running on the same box as the Xserver. This has got worse with KDE 3, so I suspect the passion for the eye candy is hurting it's portability to XFree86 versions earlier than 4.2. I'm also using FVWM2 for secure kiosks at work. I find that I can work with pretty much any WM, as long as it gives the basic functionality of loading apps, task switching and resize etc.. The rest is about 'bundled' apps and eye candy. So if I'm using a slow old machine by need X on it, I use FVWM2... If I've got a bit more grunt available, gnome + kde libs is the choice.
