Please, please note that this is not a distribution for beginners!! You _must_ have sufficient knowledge to be able to compile a kernel as the absolute minimum. The full story is here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/build.html A _very_ abbreviated discription of the installation is like this:- Boot the install cd which has an absolutely minimal linux just for installation and rescue. untar either the tiny, or the small, or the larger set of utilities. ( The larger set is for Pentium IIs and later ) Compile kernel to suit hardware. Run Linux. emerge new apps as desired ( emerge means d/l source code, compile and install automatically ) > Good way to learn Linux too, I guess. Not as good as using the Install From Scratch system. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ To save folks a _considerable_ amount of online time, I could make some disks of the installation cd, and a separate cd of some of the application source code files which I have d/led about 500megs so far. The complete list is here: http://www.gentoo.org/index-packages.html . Currently I am on release 1.2, but community interest could persuade me to upgrade to 1.4 as soon as the final version is released -- it's at the -rc1 point at the moment. I don't intend releasing cds of the release candidate because I don't want to put a millstone around my neck fixing other peoples problems. :-) -- Sincerely etc., Christopher Sawtell
