I'd strongly recommend Art of Illusion from http://www.artofillusion.org
or off the PC World cover CD before last. Runs under Java so you can put
it anywhere, and it's unusually fast for Java.

My kids like it, and it has just become good enough for me to do some of
my professional animation work on.

I don't like Blender's GUI one bit.
