The old iMacs & the eMacs do have fans & yes they are quiet. I can't say anything about the new iMac though, as I haven't had to pull one that far apart yet ;)
You may be able to pick up an old iMac for a reasonable price and use it as a fairly grunty x-terminal (compared to a Sun 3/60 :).
If you can get "education" status you will be able to pick up an eMac fairly cheep as well --- essentially a new iMac in an old iMac case. </heresy>
Have you ever tried to lift an eMac ? :D ....they are NOT light!!
