It sounds to me that Squid (www.squid-cache.org) can also do what is 
suggested.  Sure, Squid is not written in Java and is a beast to configure, 
but it's faster and is prepackaged for most distributions.

I am in a good spot to host an AP, which I have been thinking about doing for 
the last year.
