AFAIK Squid don't run under Java.

Bugger. Thought I'd made that clear in the document. Is it not?

That's what the Community Proxy does. When people access their own
private Internet links through the Community Proxy, the pages they
access become available to the whole community. For most people around
here that'd be through dial-up, but the more users that join the
network, the better the chance of a cache hit and hence a high-speed
download.

As community networks grow, they'll start to encompass users who host
their own websites with local content. These then become available to
the local community through the wireless network (the maintainer just
has to "spider" the site through a Community Proxy if it is not hosted
locally). Local content is then free, and fast.

Our local council will probably be interested in allowing access to
their own websites, and may well subsidise some form of link to
accomplish this. hen a lot more community sites follow, and before you
know it your community runs its own part of the Internet, access and
all.
