Chris - it is a bit easier than that - I have done it twice.

However, it can be very very very hard to get a job if you have 
specialized in something noone else wants. 
Certainly, it can take a while to find a position, and it will probably
not be at the level/task you want.

I note that for many employers, taking someone on is a very scary process. 
You take them on (amid many claims from everyone of how good they are), 
and then discover they are substandard. This person is now on your 
payroll, with a large salary, who cannot do the job you have for them.
It is not easy to "let such people go" (sacking them).
