Have a squiz at www.linuxant.com. The Winmodem drivers for Linux are
not free (at least not for the fully functional 56K + fax version) but
there are trial 14.4K versions so you can see whether it's worth buying
the full version. The price for the full version is $14.95 USD (so
about $25 once exchange and conversion is taken into account).

I'm not sure you can determine whether your friend will be able to use
his Winmodem under Linux until you actually try it out.

WTF? Do NOT go to linuxant.com. Flame me all you want but I think they are all a bunch of *&^%%*&( (**&^%. Why pay more for a driver than you would pay for a new lucent modem, and one that has free drivers? If your friend is unlucky enough to get a CRAP connexant modem then just tell him to buy a $15 lucent winmodem. I have never had any troubles with them. The site http://freshmeat.net/projects/ltmodem/
has free (open source) drivers though i think its not officially supported by lucent. There seem to be packages for most distros and most kernels (yip, it is definitely kernel specific) but you can always also build and install from source. Actually easier than getting the drivers under winblows.
I genuinely have had no problems with my lucent but have completely failed to get my dads connexarse going with the beta drivers (0.99...)that you can find around the net.
