Point taken.  I did not know that there were $15 lucent winmodems around
for which drivers could be had free.  

I'd be reluctant to start off a Linux installation project in a brand
new computer by pitching out one piece of crap hardware (Connexant
winmodem) to install a different piece of crap hardware (Lucent
winmodem).  Are there any "real" internal modems any more?  Or would one
be better off being able to watch the status lights of an external?
