I agree with Chris - they do work well. I have been using the HCFPCI beta drivers with my connexant modem for a quite a while now - I've used both the RPM version (which I convert to .deb with alien) and the .tar.gz source version, both work fine with Knoppix and now Mepis.
Support for Mandrake was also good as I recall (in fact I am pretty sure that the RPM version I use is the Mandrake one).
